Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: everything to know before the release on July 9, 2026

assassin's creed black flag resynced black flag remake 2026 ac black flag release date

Release date, new features, redesigned naval combat, editions, and PC configuration: we take a complete look at AC Black Flag Resynced before its launch on July 9th.

The return of Edward Kenway, 13 years later

July 9, 2026. That's the date to remember. Ubisoft Singapore re-emerges Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag in a rebuilt version from scratch on the latest generation Anvil engine — the same one as AC Shadows. And no, we're not talking about a rushed remaster with upscaled textures and a color filter. It's a complete remake : new assets, new lighting, new content. All driven by a good part of the original team, back on the project.

For those who have never touched the original - yes, it exists - Black Flag is the pirate episode of the saga. You embody Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer who finds himself involved in the Assassins/Templars conflict in the 18th-century Caribbean. High-seas navigation, boarding, treasure hunting, sword fights. It's the favorite AC of a large part of the community, and not without reason.

Matt Ryan, the original voice of Edward, is back in the studio to record new replicas and unseen scenes The original cast is also part of the game. In short, Ubisoft did not do things by halves.

Confirmed platforms: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Ubisoft Store, Steam, Epic). Playable also via GeForce Now and Steam Deck. No Switch 2 announced at the moment.

The news: not just a coat of paint

Let's be clear right away: Resynced is not just "Black Flag but prettier". Ubisoft has revised quite a few gameplay systems. Here's what changes concretely.

A revamped hand-to-hand combat

The combat system has been completely reworked with a focus on the parades and counter-attacks No more attack button spam. We now have visceral takedowns, fast rope-dart and pistol moves, and a new enemy archetype — the Demolisher — which forces you to adapt your approach. It looks like a mix between the combat of AC Shadows and the nervousness of the original.

The naval battle: even better

It was already the strong point of Black Flag, and Ubisoft decided to push the cursor. Two new secondary weapons arrive on the Jackdaw:

  • Shrapnel barrels — explode and damage enemy sails, perfect for slowing down a frigate before boarding
  • 8-pound cannons — open breaches in the shells to create exploitable weak points

The ships and enemy factions have also been revised: each faction has its own equipment, which makes the confrontations more varied than before. You will no longer fight against copy-pastes.

Infiltration: finally a real stealth system

It was the big black spot of the original. The infiltration in Black Flag 2013 was... let's say rudimentary. Resynced corrects the aim:

  • Free Squat — Edward can crouch anywhere, not just in the designated bushes
  • Free diving — stealthy approach to coastal areas and ships by water
  • Observation Mode — an extended version of Eagle Vision to spot enemies
  • Shadows and light — Edward's visibility now depends on ambient lighting

And above all: tailing and listening missions no longer cause instant desynchronization if you get spotted. Instead, it transitions to an action phase. Thank you Ubisoft, it was about time.

Modernized parkour

Parkour inherits improvements from the latest episodes: manual jump, lateral ejections, rear ejections with height gain, and smoother transitions between movements. Edward moves like a real character from 2026 now, not like a stick figure from 2013 stuck to walls.

New content: officers, shanties, and pets

Beyond gameplay improvements, Resynced adds new content. And that's where it gets really interesting.

Three new officers for the Jackdaw

You can recruit and assign new officers to the Jackdaw, each with a special ability in naval combat. Three names have been confirmed:

  • Lucy Baldwin — with its own questline
  • The Father — a mysterious character with unique perks
  • Tobias "Deadman" Smith — a veteran of piracy

Each officer has their own recruitment quest. It's not just an NPC that we buy at the market.

New missions and scenes with Matt Ryan

Additional missions, new cinematics, and new scenes involving Edward and his wife Caroline enrich the narrative. It is not yet known how many hours of gameplay this adds, but the fact that the original cast returned to record dialogue lines is a good sign of quality.

10 new shanties, a cat and a monkey

Yes, you read correctly. 10 new sailor songs are added to the classics of the original. And you can now board a cat or a monkey as a bridge companion on the Jackdaw. It's cosmetic, but let's admit it, it's exactly the kind of thing that makes you smile.

Kenway's revamped reviews and fleet

The islands (playas) have been reworked with new rewards and unique encounters. Kenway's Fleet - the passive ship management system - is now accessible directly from the captain's cabin, on all platforms. No need to exit the game or go through a mobile app as before.

On the customization side, the Jackdaw also has new skins. It's not the most important, but it's nice.

Graphics and technology: the Anvil engine does the job

Resynced runs on the latest version of the Anvil engine, the same branch as AC Shadows. In concrete terms, this gives:

  • Ray tracing global illumination (RTGI) and ray-traced reflections
  • Micropolygon pipeline and PBR — all graphic assets have been recreated from scratch
  • Water rendering and simulation redone — for a pirate game, it's still essential
  • Dynamic weather system "Atmos" — storms, wind, destructible objects reacting to bad weather
  • 60 FPS on consoles with performance options

The comparison videos between the original and Resynced show a chasm. The faces, the animations, the crowds, the water — everything has been redone. The first high-resolution images had leaked before the official announcement, and some thought they were fake because the gap was so huge.

On PS5 Pro, specific improvements are planned with enhanced ray tracing and PSSR support. On the PC side, the game supports the latest upscaling technologies (DLSS, FSR, XeSS) and frame generation. Good news as well: a software ray tracing mode is available for GPUs that do not support hardware RT. And there are dedicated presets for the Steam Deck and laptops.

Another important detail: an internet connection is required for installation, but afterwards the game is fully playable offline No DRM always-online.

PC Configuration: what is needed to run the game

The specs are rather reasonable for a next-gen remake. At a minimum, a GTX 1660 is enough for 1080p/30 FPS on Low — that's fair. The fact that Intel Arc is officially listed in both tiers (A580 at a minimum, B580 recommended) shows that Ubisoft has worked on multi-GPU optimization.

Important point: Windows 11 is mandatory . No Windows 10 on the agenda. And the SSD is required, not optional — which makes sense given the size of the assets and the streaming of data in an open world.

If you have an RTX 3060 or an RX 6600 XT, you should be fine at 1080p/60 FPS on High with standard ray tracing. For 1440p or 4K, you will probably need to upgrade to at least an RTX 4070/RX 7800 XT — but Ubisoft has not yet released the official "ultra" specs.

Editions and prices: Standard, Deluxe, and Collector

The game will also be available from day 1 with Ubisoft+ (18 $/month) , which includes the content of the Deluxe edition. If you just want to test without spending 60 bucks, it's an option. You subscribe for a month, you finish the game, you unsubscribe. Classic.

No DLC or multiplayer

Point that will divide: Ubisoft has confirmed that there will be neither DLC, nor multiplayer, nor cooperative The original's multiplayer PvP (which was nice, let's admit it) is not back. It's 100% solo. If you were hoping to replay Wanted or Manhunt with friends, it's dead.

On the DLC side, no Freedom Cry or Season Pass. All the content is in the box. One can see this as a good or a bad point — personally, a complete game at launch without day-one DLC is rare in 2026.

What disappears compared to the original

Not everything is just additions. Some things have been cut or modified:

  • Modern world sections lightened - passages outside the Animus at Abstergo Entertainment have been reduced and simplified. Less back and forth, fewer offices to explore. Honestly, few people will cry.
  • Multiplayer PvP removed — as mentioned above, the multi mode no longer exists
  • DLC Freedom Cry absent — the DLC with Adéwalé is not included in Resynced

The removal of Freedom Cry is the most discussed point online. It was a quality DLC with a likable character. Its absence is a shame, but it doesn't prevent the base game from being massive.

Should we buy it if we have already played the original?

The question that everyone is asking. And the answer really depends on what you expect.

If you are looking for a graphic overhaul with modernized gameplay, combat and stealth systems that hold up in 2026, new content, and you are ready to dive back into the Caribbean - yes, Resynced seems to justify its price. The revised combat, corrected infiltration, and new officers change the experience enough so that it is not just a rehash.

On the other hand, if you've finished Black Flag three times and know every island by heart, 60 bucks for essentially the same story with new graphics can sting. The Ubisoft+ option at $18/month remains the smart solution in this case.

And if you've never played it? Go for it. It's probably the best possible entry point into what remains one of Ubisoft's best open-world games.
