Marvel's Wolverine PS5: release date, gameplay, story, and everything we know

Marvel Wolverine PS5 PS5 games 2026 Insomniac Games

Logan returns on PS5 on September 15, 2026. Brutal gameplay, rage meter, Jean Grey, Sabretooth... let's review everything that has been confirmed by Insomniac.

September 15, 2026. Remember the date.

Announced in 2021 with a 30-second teaser that showed nothing — or almost nothing —, Marvel's Wolverine has finally shown its claws. The State of Play on June 2, 2026 dropped an extended gameplay trailer, and we are set: the game is coming out on the September 15, 2026 , exclusively on PS5. No PC announced, no Xbox. PlayStation only.

Behind the project, it's Insomniac Games — the same ones who made the Spider-Man — in collaboration with Marvel Games. And let's say they didn't make a Spider-Man with claws. The tone is radically different: darker, more violent, more mature. We are far from Peter Parker's jokes.

The game also suffered a serious blow in December 2023: Rhysida's ransomware attack on Insomniac leaked tons of assets, concepts, and snippets of gameplay. A massive leak that the devs had to absorb. But since then, the studio has taken back control, and what we saw at State of Play shows a game that seems much more polished than the leaks suggested.

A brutal fight centered on rage

The heart of the gameplay is the system of Anger . Each successful attack, each parry, each kill fills a gauge that fundamentally changes the way you play. With accumulated rage, you can either unleash more devastating blows, or activate the Healing Factor of Logan to survive the damage. It's a constant choice between offense and survival.

And no, Logan does not regenerate instantly in the middle of combat. Insomniac explained that during fighting phases, he is too focused on the battle for regeneration to work at full capacity. The injuries remain visible — gore, real-time damage — until you decide to unleash your rage in healing. Clever.

If you push the gauge to the max, you trigger the Rage Tier 3 : a monochrome berserk mode inspired by the comic book series Black, White & Blood . Visually, it's a slap in the face. Logan becomes a monster and the screen goes black and white except for the red of the blood. Very stylish.

On the moves side, Insomniac talks about Techniques — special attacks like the Tornado Spin or the Bull Rush. There are also Critical Strikes , devastating finishers that Logan can perform alone or with other characters. And if you get taken apart? The Last Stand allows you to channel your anger to come back into the fight instead of dying. Atmosphere.

The trailer also shows motorcycle phases where Logan cuts through trucks on the highway, jumps from vehicle to vehicle, and slices tires. It's not a racing game, but these set-pieces seem well integrated into the action's rhythm.

The story: Logan, mutants, and Bolivar Trask

The scenario is an original story, not an adaptation of a particular comic arc. Logan is in search of his lost memories — classic for the character — but this time, he also finds himself involved in a hunt for mutants orchestrated by Bolivar Trask , a billionaire industrialist convinced of human superiority. Does that ring a bell? Normal, he's the creator of the Sentinels in the comics.

The Raiders — a cybernetic militia — work for Trask and capture mutants. In the trailer, Logan crosses their path as he tracks down a group of kidnapped mutants. That's where he meets (or finds) Jean Grey , powerful telekinetic and emerging leader of captive mutants. The two team up against the Reavers, and Jean unleashes telekinetic attacks while Logan cuts down everything in sight.

The context is dark: mutants live in the shadows, hunted, while the rest of society ignores their existence. The only force that protects them is Team X — a unit of mutants on the front line of defense. Logan had left it three years earlier. He returns because he has no choice.

On the places side, three confirmed areas: the forests of Canada , Tokyo and Madripoor — the famous lawless island in the Marvel universe. This promises a globe-trotting game linked to Logan's past, not a unique open world.

Confirmed characters (and those who are just starting to show up)

The trailer and the PlayStation blog have confirmed or teased quite a few people. That's what we know.

Confirmed:

  • Logan / Wolverine — the only playable character, from start to finish
  • Jean Grey — major ally, NPC with telekinetic attacks in combat
  • Bolivar Trask — the main antagonist, the mastermind behind the mutant hunt
  • The Reavers — cybernetic militia, the basic enemies of the game (including Skullbuster, named in the trailer)
  • Omega Red — seen in the trailer, one of the big villains of the Wolverine universe
  • Mystique — confirmed in the trailers, its exact role remains unclear
  • Leech — among the captured mutants
  • A Sentinel Prototype — consistent with the presence of Trask

Strongly teased:

  • Sabretooth — teased at the very end of the trailer. Insomniac even dropped a "Was that Sabretooth!?" on the PlayStation blog. So yes, he will be there.

Warning: no Spider-Man, no playable X-Men team. The game takes place in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man, but it's a solo adventure centered on Logan. Jean Grey is there as an NPC ally, not as a playable character.

Mature, violent and assertive

Insomniac does not do things by halves. The creative director has confirmed a your ripe with blood, gore, and dismemberment. Yes, you will be able to cut off arms. And heads, probably. It's Wolverine, not Ratchet & Clank.

For those who prefer a less bloody experience, accessibility options allow you to reduce or disable blood, gore, and dismemberment. It's well thought out — it opens up the game to a wider audience without watering down the base version.

Moreover, Insomniac announces a complete list of accessibility options at launch: cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor assistance. The studio had already done a very good job on Spider-Man 2 in this regard, so we expect something solid.

Editions and prices: an update on pre-orders

Pre-orders have been open since the State of Play on June 2nd. Two editions on the schedule.

Important note: costumes and claws are purely cosmetic. No pay-to-win here. And Deluxe items will be unlockable in the base game through normal progression — you just pay to have them earlier and in an exclusive version.

And on PC, then?

No PC version announced. Period. The trailer says "exclusively for PS5" and "built exclusively for PlayStation 5." Sony has made a habit of bringing its exclusives to PC 1 to 2 years later — Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon, everything has been there. But for Wolverine, nothing is confirmed.

If it follows the usual pattern, a PC version could arrive around 2027 or 2028. But this is pure speculation. For now, it's PS5 or nothing.

What makes us optimistic (and what worries us a little)

On the positive side, it's Insomniac. The studio has proven with Spider-Man and its sequel that they know how to make Marvel action games that pack a punch. The mature tone is exactly what was needed for Wolverine — a character that doesn't work watered down. And the rage system seems to bring real depth to combat, not just button-mashing.

What could raise questions: we still do not know if the game is open world or more linear. The three locations (Canada, Tokyo, Madripoor) suggest rather distinct chapters than a single open world, but nothing has been clearly stated. For those expecting an open world like Spider-Man, it could be a surprise.

The other question mark is the lifespan. A mature linear game can easily fall into the trap of "12 hours and it's over." Insomniac has not communicated any numbers on this.

Our verdict (pending the test)

Marvel's Wolverine has everything to be the big PS5 game of the fall 2026. Insomniac knows how to make action games, the character deserves a mature treatment, and what we've seen of the combat system — rage, healing, techniques, finishers — is enticing. The lineup of villains (Trask, Omega Red, the Reavers, Sabretooth teased) promises something heavy.

We'll have to see how it all comes together over time. Game structure, replayability, lifespan... we'll know more this summer. Insomniac has promised more revelations before the launch. We will keep this article up to date with announcements.
