AMD has just launched the Radeon RX 9050, its most affordable graphics card in RDNA 4 architecture. 279$ for a 4nm GPU with FSR Redstone, AV1, third-gen ray tracing — on paper, it looks like the perfect entry ticket to play in 1080p without breaking the bank.

Except that reality is more twisted. Because alongside the 8GB retail model that you can buy in a box, AMD also released a 4GB OEM version. Same name. Same chip. But a memory bus cut in half — 64 bits instead of 128 — and half the VRAM. And guess what: AMD publicly mocked the 4GB cards in 2020, stating that "4GB of VRAM is insufficient for current games." It's 2026.

Result? The community is on fire. Let's take stock.

Two cards, one name: the real problem

This is where it gets crazy. AMD markets two radically different products under the name "Radeon RX 9050". The 8GB retail model, which you can buy boxed from retailers, and a 4GB OEM model found in pre-built PCs - notably the CyberPowerPC Gamer Master GMA6600BST sold for $889 at Best Buy.

Same chip. Same number of CUs. But the memory bus goes from 128 bits to 64 bits — half. The bandwidth drops from 288 GB/s to 144 GB/s. And instead of 8 GB of VRAM, you end up with 4 GB. In 2026.

The irony, though. AMD had published a blog post in 2020 to criticize competing cards with 4GB of VRAM, stating clearly that "competitors' products at the same entry-level price offer a maximum of 4GB of VRAM, which is clearly not sufficient for current games." Six years later, they do the same.

AMD defends itself: the 4GB model is "developed specifically for a partner system" and there is "no plan to sell it at retail". Okay. But the real concern is the name. When you buy a pre-assembled PC and you see "Radeon RX 9050" on the technical sheet, nothing indicates that you will receive the 4GB version amputated The PC manufacturer should specify "4 GB GDDR6" in the specs - and good luck making it systematic.

FSR Redstone: the knockout argument of the RX 9050

You are hesitating between the RX 9050 and a used RX 7600? This is where the difference lies. The RX 9050 comes with 32 AI Accelerators RDNA 4, capable of running in FP8 precision. Specifically: the card has access to the entire FSR Redstone suite , not just basic upscaling.

This includes four bricks:

  • FSR Upscaling — image reconstruction by machine learning, the evolution of FSR 4
  • ML Frame Generation — insertion of AI-predicted frames between each rendered image
  • Ray Regeneration — neural denoising for ray-traced scenes
  • Radiance Caching — acceleration of global illumination by prediction

The RX 7000 (RDNA 3) do not have the hardware for all of that. AMD backported FSR 4.1 to INT8 on RDNA 3 in June 2026, but Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching remain exclusive to RDNA 4. So for $279, you get access to AMD's complete ML ecosystem. Over 75 titles already support FSR 4.

Well, let's not lie to ourselves either. Frame generation on a base of 60 native FPS is not the same story as at 120 FPS. The added latency is felt in competitive games. But for solo AAA gaming, it transforms the experience.

AMD benchmarks: numbers to be taken with a grain of salt

AMD has posted its own figures on the official product page. Test system: Ryzen 7 9800X3D , 32GB DDR5-6000, B650E motherboard, driver 26.6.2. Tests at 1080p, medium/balanced presets.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 — 96 FPS (DX12, Medium)
  • Forza Horizon 6 — 131 FPS (DX12, Medium)
  • Pragmata — 85 FPS (DX12, Balanced)
  • 007: First Light — 60 FPS (DX12, Medium)
  • Valorant — 593 FPS (DX11, High)

First thing that's wrong: the 9800X3D. It's the best gaming processor on the market, with 3D V-Cache. Testing a GPU at $279 with a CPU at $479 is like trying tires on a Ferrari — it says nothing about the Clio. Buyers of the RX 9050 will stick it in a Ryzen 5 7600 or an i5-12400, not a 9800X3D. Real FPS will be lower, especially in CPU-bound games.

60 FPS in 007: First Light on medium. Club386 describes it as an "obvious red flag". In medium. Not in ultra, not in high. If the card is already hitting the 60 FPS limit in medium on a recent title, the games of 2027 will bring it to its knees.

Another concern: AMD does not specify if FSR was enabled during the tests. The "Balanced" presets in Pragmata could include FSR by default. Impossible to know if the 85 FPS are native or upscaled.

And the biggest issue: no independent test exists AMD did not send cards to the press. Club386 confirmed this after the launch. Until we have reviews from Hardware Unboxed, Gamers Nexus, or Les Numériques, these figures remain manufacturer communication. Period.

For whom it's done (and for whom it's not at all)

The RX 9050 8GB targets a specific profile: the 1080p gamer who wants Redstone FSR without exceeding $300. Someone who plays CS2, Valorant, Forza, and occasionally launches a AAA game in medium settings. A card for compact setups, gaming HTPCs, small ITX builds where every watt counts.

Facing Nvidia's RTX 5050, prices are tight. The 5050 displays an MSRP of $249 but is selling for around $309 on Amazon in July 2026. At $279, the RX 9050 sits right between the official price and the actual price of its rival. AMD claims that the RX 9060 (28 CU) outperforms the RTX 5050 by almost 20% at 1080p according to Technosaurus tests. The RX 9050, with half the CU, will inevitably be below — but by how much exactly? Complete mystery until we have independent tests.

And the 4GB OEM version? In 2026, 4 GB of VRAM is dead. A 64-bit bus with 144 GB/s of bandwidth is borderline for games from 2024 at medium textures. Stuff like Alan Wake 2 or Star Wars Outlaws blow through 4 GB without breaking a sweat. The only excuse is that this config is stuffed into a pre-built PC at $889 — a price that should include a minimum of 8 GB of VRAM.

Concrete advice: if you buy a pre-assembled PC with an "RX 9050", check the amount of VRAM in the technical specifications Marked 4 GB? Move on.
