Naval Combat Guide in Windrose: Cannons, Boarding, and Tactics 2026

naval combat boat windrose guide windrose 2026

Are you struggling at sea in Windrose? Positioning, cannons, chain shot, boarding, repairs: everything you need to know to dominate naval battles.

Prepare your boat before heading out to sea

Before rushing headlong into the first pirate convoy, you must equip your ship correctly. It all starts at the Shipwright's Workshop — you unlock it by following Doctor Galen's quest, quite early in the game. That's where you craft your cannons, your hull bracing, and your boarding equipment.

The cannons: crafting, upgrading, and equipping

You craft your cannons at the Workshop from wood, copper, fabric, and nails. The calibers range from 12-pound (starter) to 36-legendary books that causes absurd damage. An important thing: you cannot upgrade a cannon already equipped on your ship. You must first remove it at the Wharf, upgrade it at the Workshop, then put it back.

To equip your cannons, you need a Dock built near the water. Menu Wharf > Manage Ship > Character Action Panel (the slots in the center). Each ship has a different number of slots - a Ketch has 3, a Brigantine 6, a Frigate even more.

The hull shielding (hull bracing)

Same logic as cannons: craft at the Workshop, team at the Wharf. But where it gets interesting is the passive effects. There are three types of bracing, each with a different style:

  • Keelhold — the best overall. Damage does not reduce the duration of your repair kits. In epic: +30% duration. Crazy combo with Naval Tactics III.
  • Standfast — charging system. When you take a hit, you consume a charge and gain -25% incoming damage for 3 seconds. Good for rushes.
  • Iron Resolve - resistance to damage that goes up to 25% when your hull drops below 30%. The ultimate clutch.

The bracing plans are purchased from the Smugglers at reputation level 2 . Prioritize the Keelhold if you are a beginner — it is the most forgiving one.

Consumables: Repair Kits and Grog

Never. Leave. Without. It. The Combat Repair Kit It is crafted with 5 Wooden Planks + 1 Steel Nails + 1 Rum Bottle. It restores 30% of your ship's life over 10 seconds. Taking damage during the repair shortens the duration but does not cancel it — hence the interest of the Keelhold.

The Grog buff your crew: better damage, faster reload, increased resistance. Pop it before each engagement. It's like your crew's combat potion.

Which boat to choose?

At the beginning of the game, the Ketch Stock is your best friend. 50,000 HP, decent speed, three cannon slots. Nothing spectacular, but sturdy enough to survive early encounters. The Blackbeard Ketch is tempting with its 21 knots, but its 35,000 HP make it a floating coffin as soon as you encounter a somewhat serious enemy.

As soon as you reach reputation 2 among the Brethren of the Coast in Tortuga , rushes towards the Brigantine Blackbeard. Six 24-pound cannons, 22 knots - it's a monster. The cost is high (160 Timber, 80 Tarred Planks, 240 Linen Fabric, 80 Tarred Fabric), but the power jump is gigantic. You have twice as many cannons and a significantly thicker hull.

The Frigate is the endgame. Blueprint faction, rare resources, but twelve 36-pound cannons... can you imagine the volley.

The three pillars of naval combat

Everything rests on three things: positioning, speed management, and reloading timing If you miss one, you sink.

Positioning: never get surrounded

Rule number one. If two boats attack you, you maneuver immediately to put them on the same side of your ship Taking crossfire port-starboard is a guaranteed death. And when you have the choice, aim for the stern of the enemy - ships in Windrose rarely have rear cannons. If you position yourself right behind, you can fire with your front cannons with complete impunity.

Speed management

Forget full throttle all the time. Here's how to manage your gauge:

  • 3/4 speed — your default combat speed. Turns are much tighter, perfect for lining up a broadside.
  • Full speed — only to fill a big gap or flee a lost battle in advance.
  • 1/4 speed — when you slip behind the enemy stern to finish it off quietly.

Timing and aiming of cannons

Your boat has been towing for three independent sides: left, right, and front . Each side has its own cooldown of 11 seconds. The trick is to turn between the sides to maintain a constant fire. You shoot left, you pivot, you shoot right, you pivot again. At the beginning of the game with a Ketch, alternating two sides is enough. But as soon as you face several boats or elites, the third side (front) becomes essential.

For targeting: aim lower than you think The cannonballs have a natural arc that makes them pass over the target if you aim for the center of mass. And watch out for the waves — the big swells physically block the projectiles. No need to waste a volley if there's a mountain of water between you and your target.

Chain Shot: the ammunition that everyone ignores (wrongly)

You have two types of ammunition. Press 1 for regular bullets (raw damage), press 2 for the Chain Shot — chained cannonballs targeting the sails. And that's where many players miss out.

Touching the sails enough times applies a massive speed debuff to the enemy. The boat slows down, turns poorly, and becomes an easy prey. This is particularly crucial in two situations:

  • Fighting against multiple enemies — Slow down the first one while you pour the second one. Divide and conquer.
  • Elite enemies/naval bosses — those, you can't just burst them down. Slow them down, circle around, and nibble on their hull.

The winning combo: start with Chain Shot to immobilize, then switch to regular cannonballs to finish the job.

Boarding: how to board properly

Sinking a boat is good. Boarding it is better — the loot is significantly better. But you have to do it right.

Prerequisites

You must have some Boarding Gear equipped via your Wharf. Without it, no boarding possible. The gear is crafted and upgraded at the Shipwright's Workshop like cannons and bracing. The more you improve it, the stronger your AI crew members will be during the assault.

Boarding process

When you pound an enemy ship to a critical state, it becomes "disabled" — it stops and ceases firing. It's your window. Approach and trigger the boarding action. Your crew throws grappling hooks, everyone jumps onto the opposing deck, and then it's pure close combat.

Boarding tactics

The bridge of an enemy Ketch is tiny. Dodging is almost impossible in this space. My recommendation: equip a Blunderbuss or a Musket before jumping. Stay close to the railing, let your AI crew take the hits, and take down enemy pirates from a distance. The Musket hits 1800+ on a headshot - it cleans up quickly.

And above all: do not board each boat When you're fighting a group, sink the first ones and only board the last one. It prevents you from boarding in the middle of a naval battle - and sunken ships still drop recoverable loot, especially Repair Kits that are very useful for later.

When your boat sinks (and how to recover from it)

It's going to happen. You turn the wrong way, you take a 24-pound broadside in the hull, and your ship sinks. Don't panic - well, a little bit anyway.

When your flagship sinks, you find yourself in the water. Immediately summon your small rescue sailboat (hotkey dedicated) and get out. If the enemy boat is still hostile and destroys your dinghy, your character dies — and dying at sea means dropping all your inventory to the bottom of the ocean. Underwater corpse run. Yes, it's as horrible as it sounds.

The good news: your cargo is not lost. Once back at your base, approach your Wharf and use the ship recovery menu. It costs resources — the bigger the ship, the more expensive it is — but all the loot stored in the hold is returned intact. Phew.

Tortuga and the naval factions

Tortuga, it's the central hub of the game. And for naval, that's where everything happens in terms of progression.

Bounty Agents and Provisioners

The Bounty Agents accept your Pirate Insignias (looted from defeated enemies) in exchange for faction reputation. This reputation unlocks purchases at the Provisioners — cannons, shields, and especially the Naval Tactics .

FAQ naval combat Windrose

What is the best boat to start naval combat?

The Stock Ketch. 50,000 HP, three cannons, decent speed. Resistant enough to learn without sinking every five minutes, unlike the Blackbeard Ketch and its 35,000 HP made of papier-mâché.

How to repair your boat in the middle of a battle?

With Combat Repair Kits (5 Wooden Planks + 1 Steel Nails + 1 Rum Bottle). They restore 30% of HP over 10 seconds. You can use several per combat, so stack them before leaving. Also remember to pick up those from sunken ships.

Is the Chain Shot worth it or is it a noob trap?

It's far from being a trap. Against a single weak enemy, you can do without it. But as soon as you face elites or multiple boats, the Chain Shot becomes essential. Slowing down an enemy completely changes the dynamics of the fight.

Where to buy the blueprints for Brigantine and Frigate?

At the Brethren of the Coast in Tortuga. The Brigantine unlocks at reputation level 2, the Frigate later. You need Guineas - the faction currency - in addition to crafting resources.

Do I lose everything if my boat sinks?

No. The cargo in the hold is recoverable at the Wharf via the recovery menu. However, if you die while swimming after the shipwreck, you drop your personal inventory to the bottom of the water. Summon your rescue sailboat immediately and flee.

Should we approach every enemy ship?

No. Against a group, sink the first ones and only board the last. Boarding in the middle of a naval battle is suicide - the other boats keep shooting at you while you're on the enemy's deck.
