What exactly is Windrose?

27 €. That's the entrance fee for one of the most ambitious survival games of 2026. Windrose lands in Early Access on Steam with a clear proposition: crafting, basic construction, souls-like combat, and naval battles—all in a procedurally generated pirate world. And contrary to what one might think when seeing the "survival" tag, there is no PvP. It's pure PvE, playable with up to 8 players in co-op.

The pitch? You embody a pirate captain who has the brilliant idea to challenge Blackbeard. What starts as a classic revenge story quickly turns into something bigger—empires, pirate clans, supernatural forces. In short, it's not just "hit trees and build a wall." There's a real narrative behind it.

The game revolves around 50 to 70 hours of content for the main quest, spread across 3 biomes, around thirty islands, and over 90 handcrafted points of interest. And the developers are planning an additional 50% of content for the final version. Needless to say, there is plenty to do.

Your first hours: resources and survival

You spawn on a starting island and there, no endless tutorial. The game quickly releases you into the wild. First thing to do: cut down trees and gather plant fibers . This is the basis of everything. Wood + fibers = tools, buildings, crafting stations. You can hit trees with your bare hands at first, but craft yourself a stone axe and a stone pickaxe as soon as possible. It changes life.

Then, the thing that many beginners miss: craft a bigger bag . Your starting inventory is ridiculous. In 10 minutes of exploration, you will be bursting at the seams. The upgraded bag is one of the first things to unlock.

A piece of advice I wish I had at the beginning: always keep some extra wood on you . Seriously. You will need it to build improvised stairs to reach perched chests, makeshift bridges, torches in dark caves. And while we're at it, never go exploring without 10 bandages and 10 portions of 2 different types of food minimum. The food in Windrose provides temporary buffs rather than a simple hunger system, but these buffs are vital for combat.

The checklist of the first day

  1. Harvest wood and plant fibers thoroughly
  2. Craft stone axe + stone pickaxe
  3. Place a campfire (5 wood) — it's your respawn point AND the heart of your base
  4. Build a workbench to unlock basic recipes
  5. Craft a larger bag immediately
  6. Place a bed (= permanent respawn point) and a tent
  7. Decorate your base for the rest buff (yes, furniture serves a purpose)

The base building system

Windrose has a construction system centered around the bonfire . It's not just a decoration: it creates a light beam that defines your base area. All your crafting stations, your chests, your add-ons must stay within this radius to function. It's a bit like a base totem, and everything revolves around it.

The smart thing about the game: stations upgrade automatically via add-ons that you place in the Bonfire shelf. No upgrade menu, no right-click "improve". You build a sawhorse next to your workbench and boom, new recipes appear. It's intuitive once you understand the principle, but it can be confusing at first.

For the progression, you will go through crafting tier (from 1 to 4). Tier 1 is stone tools and wooden structures. Tier 2 unlocks metallurgy with the Charcoal oven and the foundry — you transform copper into ingots, and then the serious stuff begins. Tier 3-4, it's firearms, advanced armor, alchemy, and shipbuilding.

An important detail: no need to build mega-fortresses The stations work placed on the ground, even without walls or a roof. The holes in your shack don't break your beds or your buffs. Start simple, improve as you go. And above all: remember to place a Teleportation Bell (Fast Travel Bell) as soon as possible in your database. It's your instant return ticket from anywhere on the map. An absolute must.

Another trick from an old hand: build "panic rooms" (tent + bed) near dangerous areas or ruins. If you die facing a boss or a tough mob, you respawn right next to it instead of having to walk for 10 minutes. Trust me, it saves a lot of frustration.

The battle: souls-like but accessible

Well, let's talk about the big piece. The combat in Windrose is inspired by souls-like: you have to manage your stamina, learn to dodge and parry. But it's not Dark Souls either. The timing is more forgiving, the parry windows are wider. Let's say it's a souls-like. light — demanding enough to be satisfying, not punitive enough to be frustrating.

The key mechanic: the perfect block If you stop at the right moment, you break the enemy's posture (visible through small icons under their health bar). Once the posture is broken, the enemy is vulnerable... and you have a window to land a heavy attack. This is the core of the system. Master this and you're set for 80% of the game.

Allocation of stats: how not to mess up

Your first 4 points? Endurance and Vitality Without debate. You will die way too quickly otherwise, especially against level 3+ mobs. After that, you can invest in your damage stat according to your preferred weapon. Precision for the rapier and musket, Strength for heavy weapons, Agility for the saber.

For talents, unlock Agile (level 2) as soon as possible — it reduces the stamina cost of dodges and jumps. Then specialize: Marksman for the pistol/musket, Fencer for the rapier.

If you are starting out, the build Gunslinger is by far the most comfortable. You keep your distance, you kite the mobs, and the musket deals insane critical damage on weak points. This is the "I want to survive without getting a headache" build. The rapier is more rewarding once mastered, but you have to be comfortable with parrying.

Little tip: keep 2 copies of each unique weapon or armor One for use, one for disassembling and recovering materials. The game is in Early Access, recipes may change, and having stock is never lost.

The first boss: Thomas Richards

Your first real test. Thomas Richards is a heavily armed pirate captain lurking at the bottom of a cave in the Coastal Jungle. To trigger it, you need 4 Black Marks (items for quest). Before going there, make sure you have:

  • Weapon + firearm + 5 pieces of armor at level 5 max for this area
  • Stock of food, potions, and bandages
  • A tent in front of the cave entrance as respawn point

The fight itself? He hits hard - 2 or 3 hits and you're dead if you're not geared. The strat: continuous light attacks to break his posture (the small icons under his life), heavy attack when he holds..., and especially side dodge when his hand glows red (grab unstoppable). He also throws bombs, but it's well telegraphed. In co-op, one player tanks and the others DPS during the stagger. Solo, it's about rhythm: attack, block, dodge, recover your stamina. Repeat.

Exploration: biomes and progression

The world of Windrose is divided into 4 biomes, each with its resources, its enemies, and its boss.

The Coastal Jungle is your playground for the first 15-20 hours. Dense, full of hidden ruins with chests and blueprints, aggressive wildlife (level 3+ sows will wreck you if you're not careful). Defeating Thomas Richards unlocks the Foothills and increases your level cap.

The Cursed Marshes, that's where it really gets hardcore. Environmental hazards, elite enemies, but also alchemy resources to craft the best potions. And the Ashen Lands... we'll see when the devs finish them. For now, the content goes up to Tier 3.

Tips for exploration: explore by day, mine and craft by night Visibility is crucial in this game. And don't forget to check the tides—some areas are only accessible at low tide. The ruins in particular hide Artifact Chests with unique blueprints.

Kitchen and food buffs

Food in Windrose isn't just to avoid starving to death. In fact, you don't die of hunger. Each dish provides a temporary buffer which increases your max life or your combat stats for 15 to 30 minutes. And that changes everything. A player who eats two dishes before a boss literally has double the survivability of a player who goes in on an empty stomach.

At the beginning, basic dishes like the Bacon and Eggs (+5 Vitality, 15 min) or the Seafood Skewer (+5 Force, 15 min) do the job. In mid-game, you aim for rare dishes: the Seafood Platter (+20 Vitality, 30 min) and the Seasoned Crocodile Meat (+20 Strength, 30 min) are a must. The golden rule: always have 2 active buffs before a serious fight. One for life, one for damage.

Multiplayer and co-op

Windrose supports up to 8 players in co-op (4 recommended for performance), either by hosting your game directly or via a dedicated server. No Steam/Epic crossplay though — everyone must be on the same platform.

To play with friends, the simplest way: one player launches "Host a Game" from the menu, the game generates an invitation code, and the others join via Multiplayer > Connect to a Server. You can also use the Steam overlay (Shift+Tab > invite). It's quick and works without network configuration.

For 24/7, you can rent a dedicated server at Nitrado or G-Portal (around 10-15 €/month). The advantage: the world stays online even when the host disconnects, and you can tweak the settings (difficulty, spawn rate, mob life). However, the game had some server issues at launch — lag spikes, port forwarding problems. The devs are working on it, but it's Early Access, expect some friction.

10 random tips to progress faster

  1. Farm the copper early — it's the bottleneck of Tier 2, copper tools speed up everything
  2. Put decorations in your base — each furniture sub-category increases your rest buff, it's not cosmetic
  3. Use outdoor campfires — you can get the rest buff away from your base
  4. Loot selectively — your inventory is limited, take only what matters
  5. Do not fight against sows before level 3 — they hit like trucks
  6. Craft from the chests of your base — all chests in the Bonfire's range share their resources
  7. Upgrade your naval ammunition - the Chain Shot slows down enemy sails, very useful for boarding
  8. Look for the Rapier of a Thousand Cuts — in a traveler's camp trunk, it is one of the best weapons in the game
  9. Always wear a Minor Necklace of Vitality (+4 FREE VIT, it can be found quite early)
  10. Specialize in co-op — a tank, a DPS, a naval build. It accelerates progression enormously

FAQ

How long does Windrose last?

The main quest takes between 50 and 70 hours depending on your pace. And the developers plan for 50% additional content by the final version. In Early Access, you already have 3 biomes, 30 islands, and 90+ points of interest.

Is Windrose difficult?

The combat is souls-lite, so there is a learning curve. But it's more accessible than Dark Souls or Elden Ring. Survival itself is quite gentle — no death from hunger, no temperature. The main danger is unprepared fights.

Is Windrose playable solo?

Yes. The game is totally playable solo. Some bosses are a bit tougher alone, but it's doable with the right gear and food buffs. Co-op makes things easier but is not mandatory.

What PC setup for Windrose?

The game runs on mid-range setups. A 12th gen i5, 32 GB of RAM DDR4/DDR5, and a mid-range GPU (even an Intel Arc A310 can handle 37 FPS in 1080p High). For comfortable 1440p, aim for an RTX 4060 / RX 7600 or better. Optimization is decent for an Early Access.

Is there PvP in Windrose?

No. Windrose is 100% PvE co-op. No player versus player, no base raids. You play with your buddies against the world, AI pirates, and bosses.

Will Windrose be in French?
