20 Windrose tips to get started in Early Access (guide 2026)

26.99€ as a launch promotion (until April 21). 1.5 million wishlists. A peak of 220,000 simultaneous players on the first weekend. Compass rose is the pirate survival game everyone has been waiting for since it was announced at the PC Gaming Show in late 2025 — and now that it's finally here in Early Access, it's a rush.

Except that's the thing: the game doesn't hold your hand. The tutorial vaguely teaches you how to build a workbench and hit a crab, and after that, figure it out. The result? Stupid deaths, lost stuff, hours spent farming the wrong resources. We've been there.

This guide compiles the 20 tips we wish we had known before launching our first game . No theoretical blah blah — only concrete tested in-game since the release of April 14, 2026.

First reflex as soon as you place the Workbench: manufacture the Sailor Backpack . The base bag is ridiculously small, you'll end up full after three trees. The Sailor Backpack doubles your capacity and only requires wood and leather - nothing complicated at this stage. Every minute spent with the default bag is wasted time making back and forth trips.

Before building anything, take a complete tour of the starting island and loot absolutely everything. There are unique items that you won't find easily later:

• Minor Necklace of Vitality — +4 VIT, huge in early game when you have 100 HP
• Rapier of a Thousand Cuts — applies bleeding, best early game weapon
• Fast Travel Bell — free if you find it instead of crafting it
• Tumbaga Ingot — is used for weapon ascension, very rare to farm
• Lamp — essential for caves and nights

Search the wrecks, the abandoned camps, the chests hidden behind the waterfalls. The first island is a disguised tutorial — take advantage of it.

You're going to tell yourself "I don't need it right now." False. The game regularly puts you in situations where placing a Bonfire + Tent quickly saves your life. Nightfall in a hostile area? Bonfire. Need to respawn before a boss? Tent. No materials = back to the last spawn, potentially at the other end of the map.

Keeping 30 wood and 15 fibers at all times is non-negotiable.

Food in Windrose is not just for filling a hunger bar — each dish gives temporary stat buffs You can have two active at the same time. Even basic stuff like coconuts give a Vitality bonus that makes a difference when a boar charges at you.

Tip: the potatoes and pepper found on the starting island allow you to craft dishes with a decent healing bonus. Always collect them.

You will see them everywhere on the first beaches. Catch them. They serve as comfort trophies for your base — and comfort, we'll talk about it, it's one of the most underestimated mechanisms of the game. Each crab picked up = a decorative object that increases your Rested buff.

The tutorial teaches you how to block. Forget it. perfect block (pressing hold battery at the moment of impact) is infinitely more effective: it cancels the damage, consumes almost no stamina, and opens a window for counterattack. Holding down the guard button burns your blocking bar in three hits — you end up staggered and take everything in the face.

Train on the dodges and the crabs. Yes, even on the crabs. Timing muscles.

The winning pattern against 90% of enemies: you hit once or twice, you step back a few steps, you wait for the enemy to advance, you place a heavy attack or a running attack, and you start over. It's not glamorous, but it's what works.

Especially do not hyphenate every time to dodge. The dash consumes your stamina. Walking backwards is enough against most mobs. Save the dash for bosses and area attacks.

The Level 3 saws On the starting island, you can be one-shot with basic stuff. It's not a bug, it's intentional. The quest that asks you to kill a boar? Wait until you have at least a copper armor and are comfortable with parrying. There's no shame in fleeing - the game doesn't penalize you for that.

Veteran tip: laying of wooden fences around enemies. The majority of wildlife does not know how to pathfind around obstacles. You can literally encircle a bear and hit it quietly through the fence. It's pure and hard cheese, but the game allows it and it saves runs.

Most weapons have a hidden attack activated by the middle click. The rapier does a devastating double slash. The musket has a precise shot. Few players know this because the game doesn't explain it anywhere — test it with each new weapon you acquire.

All your crafting stations must be in the Bright light beam from the Bonfire to operate. No Bonfire = no forge, no workshop, nothing. And if the fire goes out, your stations too. Remember to relight it regularly and keep wood nearby.

The Bonfire also serves as a respawn point. Place it intelligently — not in the middle of an enemy camp, not on the edge of a cliff. Find a flat, open space, with room to expand your base.

Each type of furniture you place in your base - bed, stool, table, shelf, carpet - adds comfort. And comfort determines the duration of your buff Rested , which boosts your stamina regeneration. The tricky part: only the first piece of furniture in each sub-category counts. Placing three identical stools is useless.

With a well-furnished base, you can raise Rested to 30 minutes. The difference in exploration and combat is huge — your stamina returns much faster, you can sprint longer, chain more attacks.

That's the classic trap of the early hours. To upgrade your Workbench, you don't go to an upgrade menu — you build the Sawhorse next to The game detects proximity and automatically unlocks advanced recipes. The same goes for the forge: the Charcoal Kiln and the Smelting Furnace must be close to the Bonfire.

If you're wondering why you can't craft an item even though you have the resources, it's probably a missing add-on.

Craft or find a Fast Travel Bell and plant it in your base. It's your anchor point on the island. Without it, each death sends you back to the Bonfire — which is fine, but Fast Travel allows you to teleport between multiple points on the same island and between visited islands.

Pro tip: manufactures several beautiful and store them. When you arrive on a new island, the first thing to place is Bonfire + Tent + Fast Travel Bell. This combo of three items completely secures you.

The Windrose map is vast. What looks like an island "right next door" on the map can take 10 minutes of actual navigation. Before raising the anchor, make sure you have:

• Repair kits — you are going to be attacked at sea
• Food — with your active buffs
• Materials for a Bonfire + Tent + Fast Travel Bell — for your temporary base on the next island
• Your quick care items in bar — not buried in the ship's inventory

This last point is crucial. In the heat of naval combat, you don't have time to open six menus to find your bandages. Drag your consumables into the ship's quick slots before setting sail.

It's not a gameplay trick per se, but seriously: press B when you're on your boat . Your crew starts singing shanties. Long crossings instantly become more bearable. Seán Dagher recorded the songs for the Supporter Bundle — it's real quality work.

If you need wood in bulk, bring your ship close to a wooded coast and cannons the trees Each tree destroyed releases logs. It is infinitely faster than cutting them one by one with an axe. It also works for cleaning up an enemy camp before landing - not very ethical pirate, but effective.

Your first hours, you haven't chosen your final weapon yet. Your life bar is tiny. The best strategy: all-in Vitality Until level 5-6. You survive, you explore, you learn the mechanics without dying every three minutes.

Once you have tested the sabers, rapiers, muskets, and halberds, you will have an idea of what you like. At that moment, reset your stats (this is possible later in the game) and distribute them in a 2/3 main stat mode of your weapon, 1/3 Endurance.

In the talent tree, Agile reduces stamina consumption on dashes and jumps by 15% . It's universal, it works with any build. Whether you play rapier or greatsword, you will dash. As long as it costs less.

Second choice: Marathon Runner (+20 maximum stamina). Combined with the Rested buff from a furnished base, your stamina becomes almost unlimited.

As mentioned earlier for survival, but it's worth emphasizing: the dishes cooked in Windrose are real stat boosts. Some advanced recipes give +5 Strength or +4 Agility for 20 minutes. It's the equivalent of several levels of stats - for free.

As soon as you unlock the Stove (Bonfire add-on), explore the available recipes. Fish-based dishes + rare herbs are generally the most powerful. Look for Misty Orchids on advanced islands — it's a key ingredient for the best recipes.

Between 50 and 70 hours according to your playstyle, according to the developers. If you explore everything and do the side quests, expect more 80+. The Early Access content covers 3 biomes with around 30 islands and 90 hand-crafted points of interest.

Yes, the game is entirely designed for solo play. Co-op for up to 4 players (or 8 on a dedicated server) is optional. The difficulty does not scale with the number of players — which means that co-op makes the game easier, not solo play harder.

No, Windrose is 100% PvE . No raids between players, no base looting. It's you (and your buddies) against the world. Perfect if you've had your fill of toxicity in other survival games.
