Windrose Boss Guide: Order, Strategies and Rewards (2026)

windrose boss guide windrose 2026 boss fight strategy

Thomas Richards, Israel Hands, Ghost Captain, High Priestess: we break down every Windrose boss with working strategies, recommended builds and loot to grab.

Every boss in Windrose Early Access

Windrose dropped into Early Access on April 14, 2026 and — shocker — it's the pirate game everyone was waiting for. 1.5 million Steam wishlists, 89% positive reviews in a week. The soulslite combat system delivers, the ships are great, and the exploration is addictive. But where most players hit a wall is the bosses.

Because yeah, Windrose might be a pirate survival game, but its bosses hit really hard. These fights demand preparation, timing and a good amount of patience. Walking into Thomas Richards undergeared means staring at the respawn screen in 10 seconds flat. We've all done it.

This guide covers every boss available in the launch build: the 4 main story bosses plus the world encounters you'll run into while exploring. For each one, we detail the prep, attack patterns, solo and co-op strategies, and the rewards worth fighting for.

Thomas Richards — your first real test

Boss Thomas Richards in Windrose - Coastal Jungle Click to enlarge

Thomas Richards is the pirate captain you face during the "Revenge Is Best Served Cold" quest after collecting 4 Black Marks in Blackbeard's waters. He's hiding at the back of a camp in the Coastal Jungle, behind a wooden gate. And he's about to remind you that Windrose isn't your average survival game.

Mandatory preparation

The max upgrade level before unlocking the next zone is Level 5. And you need to be there. Primary weapon, firearm, and all 5 armor pieces. Without this, you won't have enough DPS to break his posture and his unblockable attacks will one-shot you. If you're short on materials, farm copper on the starter island before heading in.

For consumables: 2 active food buffs (Coconut Milk with Bananas for Endurance, or a cooked meal for HP — skip raw bananas, they barely do anything), the Rested buff from your campfire, Healing Potions over Bandages, and gunpowder stocked up if you're playing ranged. Elixir of Cruelty (+8% damage) is a solid bonus if you have it.

Attack patterns

Richards has four main moves:

  • Double/Triple Swing — chained sword strikes, well telegraphed. Dodge (Ctrl), perfect block, or just back up. Punish with 1-2 light hits + a heavy after the last swing.
  • Frontal Attack (red glow) — unblockable. You see the red flash, you dodge sideways. No negotiation.
  • Charge + Grab (red glow + shimmer) — his most dangerous attack. He glows, charges, and if he catches you that's half your health bar gone. Dodge timing is tight but always telegraphed.
  • Bomb Toss — he throws grenades, especially if you're shooting from range (he input-reads). Two backward dodges and you're clear.

Combat strategy

The key with Richards is posture. He has shield icons below his health bar — hit them to break them. Break them all and he staggers, giving you a free DPS window for heavy attacks. But if you back off too long, the shields regenerate. Keep the pressure up.

Solo, the rhythm is: wait for his combo to end, hit 1-2 times + heavy, back off to regen stamina, repeat. No greed. He hyper-armors through your attacks if you overcommit. If you've got gunpowder, the Blunderbuss shreds his posture.

In co-op, one player tanks and parries for aggro while the others DPS during staggers. Way simpler with a crew.

Recommended builds: Greatsword (massive posture damage without needing perfect parries), Rapier for technical players, or Blunderbuss for kiting. Priority stat: Endurance for stamina.

Reward: unlocks the Foothills, access to iron ingots and further progression.

The Bosun — starter island skill check

This one you'll run into before even finishing the starter island. The Bosun hangs around pirate camps and shipwrecks in the Coastal Jungle. He's technically a mini-boss, but honestly, he's killed more players than Thomas Richards since launch.

He fights with a ship mast as a club — yes, really. His horizontal swings have massive range and his ground slams deal AoE damage. Phase 1 is classic kiting: dodge the sweeps, attack during slam recovery. Phase 2, he pulls out explosives. Keep your distance and wait for punish windows.

The most important tip: clear the adds before engaging. The pirates around him are the real danger, not the Bosun himself. A Rapier of a Thousand Cuts with bleed stacks melts his health bar if you stay patient.

Rewards: unique weapons, Tumbaga Ingots (essential for ascending gear to Epic), rare hides and upgrade materials. The Bosun respawns, so you can farm him.

Israel Hands — Blackbeard's spectral lieutenant

Boss Israel Hands in Windrose - Foothills Click to enlarge

Israel Hands is the final boss of the Foothills, at the end of the "Needle in a Haystack" quest. And it's a brutal difficulty spike compared to Thomas Richards. We're going from standard sword fights to spectral magic, AoEs and combos that melt your health in two seconds if you miss a parry.

Preparation: Level 10 minimum

No shortcuts here. Primary weapon, firearm, 5 armor pieces: everything at Level 10. Ascend your weapons to Epic if possible. The 2-piece set bonus matters — Conquistador (15% damage reduction) is very comfortable for this fight. And especially, the Epic Rapier of a Thousand Cuts is probably the most effective weapon here: 5 bleed stacks, dodge back, let the DoT do the work.

For buffs: Coffee (+20 Endurance, 30 min) is a must. Combine with an Epic Seafood Platter or Spicy Chicken with Sweet Potato for HP. Full stack of Healing Potions, no bandages.

Attack patterns

  • Poison Lunge — he crouches and charges with a poison trail. Dodge sideways, never backward.
  • Sword Combo (1-3 hits) — parry or dodge each swing. Your DPS window is after the last hit in the series.
  • Spirit Blast — ghost energy on his shoulder fires a projectile. Easy to dodge, but you need to see it coming.
  • Deadly Whirlwind — summons skeletons for a spinning attack. Back way off, dodge outward.
  • Spectral Charge (red, unblockable) — his signature move. Hyper-armor, brutal charge. If you don't have enough Vitality and gear, it can one-shot. Tank it with HP buffs if you miss the dodge.

Strategy

Israel Hands has long, readable wind-ups — but he punishes greed severely. The rhythm: sidestep dodge his attacks, 1-2 hits during recovery, retreat. If you're on Rapier, stack bleeds and kite. Greatsword or Dueling Greatsword hits hard enough to shorten the fight but gives you less room for error.

Perfect blocking works even with green gear if you have the right food buffs. But honestly, unless you've nailed the timing, dodge > block for this fight.

Rewards: the Soul Eater (Epic two-handed sword with life drain on F, 2-minute cooldown, scales with Vitality), Charon's Obol (quest item), 20-30 Undead Essence, 50 XP, and access to the Cursed Swamps. Plus an Ancient Chest in the boss room.

Ghost Captain — the optional Temple Dungeon boss

Spectral combat in Windrose dungeons Click to enlarge

The Ghost Captain is an optional boss tucked away in the Temple Dungeon, accessible via a branch of the "Needle in a Haystack" quest. He's the only boss you're not required to kill to advance the story — but you should go anyway.

Why? Because he drops the Soul Eater, a Strength greatsword with a special attack that drains enemy health (F key, 2-min cooldown). It's one of the best weapons in the game for tanky builds that want sustain without chugging potions constantly.

How to beat him

Recommended level: 10-12. The Ghost Captain tests the same soulslite mechanics as Richards but with more HP and spectral patterns. His grabs are brutal — he charges with a flash, and getting caught means half your health. The key is reading his wind-ups, dodging through him rather than backward (his reach exceeds your dash distance), and punishing with 1-2 hits max.

Drop a tent at the dungeon entrance as a respawn point. Nothing worse than running through the entire dungeon after every wipe.

Post-fight stat priorities: Strength + Vitality to synergize with the Soul Eater. The life drain scales with Vitality, so this is the time to pivot your build if you want to get the most out of this weapon.

High Priestess — the Cursed Swamps wall

Combat in Windrose - Cursed Swamps Click to enlarge

The High Priestess is the hardest boss in the launch build. A towering pink plant entity, rooted at the center of her arena in the Cursed Swamps. She doesn't move — but her attacks cover nearly the entire zone. This is an endurance fight, not a burst one.

Preparation: gear tier 11-15

This is endgame for current content. Your armor needs to be full Epic, tier 11 minimum. Crude-type weapons (maces, halberds) deal extra damage against her. And given how long this fight lasts, consumables aren't optional:

  • Healing Potions (Great) — full stack, you'll need them
  • Elixir of Pain Relief — passive damage reduction, clutch against AoEs
  • +20 damage food buff + a max HP/stamina meal
  • Anti-plague consumables — the Cursed Swamps biome inflicts passive plague, and the fight takes place in the same toxic atmosphere

The fight in detail

Unlike other bosses, the High Priestess doesn't move. But her attacks more than make up for it:

1. Keep moving. Plague AoE zones stay on the ground and deal DoT. If you stop, you die. Simple as that.

2. Kill adds immediately. She summons plague thralls regularly. If you let them pile up, it's a guaranteed wipe. Ignore them only if you can finish the boss in the next few seconds.

3. DPS only during safe windows. After her major AoE attacks, you have a few seconds to hit. Short controlled combos — never drain your stamina.

4. Destroy the spheres on her back. A detail many players miss: the High Priestess has destructible spheres on her back. Breaking them stuns her for a few seconds — your cleanest DPS window in the fight. Circle around her to reach them.

In co-op, this fight is significantly more manageable. One player handles adds, the others DPS the boss and rotate to break spheres. Solo... it's doable, but expect multiple attempts.

Mini-bosses: Savage Boar and Elite Captains

Outside the main bosses, two types of mini-bosses roam the open world and are worth farming.

The Savage Boar lurks near resource nodes and cave entrances. It's a sneaky early game check: its charges hurt and it has way more HP than other mobs in the area. The trick is using terrain — climb a rock or find an elevation and hit it from above. It struggles with height differences. Apply bleed if you can. Loot: rough hides and basic materials, useful for your first armor crafts.

The Elite Captains are scattered across pirate camps and on ships during boarding events. They hit hard and have demanding parry patterns. Always clear the surrounding mobs before engaging. They drop high-value items and insignias — the kind of loot that makes a real difference for your mid-game upgrades.

General tips for every boss

A few rules that apply to every boss fight in Windrose, regardless of which one:

  • Always lock on — the camera stabilizes, dodges become directional, and you never lose sight of the boss during charges.
  • Place a tent/campfire near the arena — for the Rested buff and quick respawn. Trekking 5 minutes through jungle between attempts is a no.
  • 2 food buffs + Rested, always — the difference between a hard fight and an impossible one is often just the buffs you forgot to activate.
  • Blunderbuss is S-tier against bosses — massive burst, breaks posture fast, perfect for kiting. Stock gunpowder as early as possible.
  • No greed — the number one rule of soulslite. 1-2 hits, dodge out, repeat. If you go for a third, you eat a grab.

FAQ

What order should I fight Windrose bosses?

The main quest order is: Thomas Richards (Coastal Jungle, level 5-6) then Israel Hands (Foothills, level 9-10) then High Priestess (Cursed Swamps, level 12-15). Ghost Captain is optional and can be done between Richards and Hands, or after Hands. The Bosun is a world boss you can farm anytime.

What's the best build for bosses?

The Rapier of a Thousand Cuts with a Precision build is the most versatile: bleed stacks deal massive DoT damage, you stay mobile, and it's effective against every boss. Blunderbuss as backup for burst. If you prefer heavy melee, the Greatsword on Strength is solid but less forgiving.

How to beat Thomas Richards easily?

Upgrade all gear to Level 5, eat 2 food buffs, activate Rested, and use a Blunderbuss. Kite with shots to break his posture, dodge his charges (red glow), and punish after combos. In 3-4 stagger cycles, he's done.

Where to find the Soul Eater?

The Soul Eater drops from Israel Hands (Foothills boss) and the Ghost Captain (optional Temple Dungeon boss). It's a Strength greatsword with life drain — it scales with Vitality and its special attack (F) has a 2-minute cooldown.

Can you solo the High Priestess?

Yes, but it's the longest and most demanding fight in the game solo. Plague thrall adds are the main problem — in co-op, someone can manage them while you DPS. Solo, you have to alternate between killing adds and DPSing the boss, which extends the fight considerably. Bring plenty of potions and patience.
