The 20 best Crimson Desert gear items to grab first

Crimson Desert launched on March 19, 2026 and, honestly, it does very little to point you toward its best gear. Pearl Abyss tucked weapons, armor, and useful tools all over Pywel: behind waterfalls, inside side caves, and at vendors you can easily miss. Without some of these pickups, certain bosses will flatten you.

We've rounded up the 20 most useful pickups for the early and mid-game. Some of them nearly cut the difficulty in half, especially palm concentrates, while others hand you Abyssal-effect weapons within the first few hours. As of September 17, 2026, Patch 1.04.00 has improved storage, but none of the 20 recommendations below have been officially rebalanced out of this list. You can grab it within the first few minutes of the game. Just above Hernand Bridge, in the cliffside, there's a small sanctuary that doesn't even appear on the map. Light the two candles on either side of the statue, the gate will rise, and the chest is right there. It's a one-handed sword with bonus attack speed. On paper that doesn't sound wild, but it's a real upgrade over the starting Grey Wolf Sword, and it stays useful through the first two chapters.

You get this one automatically by beating Horn Splitter at the end of Chapter 2. It's part of the main quest, so you can't miss it. And yes, it hits hard. Lord's Sword comes with the Abyssal Core Wind Slash which occasionally sends a wind wave skimming along the ground with your light attacks. It knocks back nearby enemies and chips away at their health, which is especially handy when a bandit camp starts crowding you.

Now we're talking. Wondo is a greatsword with Abyssal cores already built in: higher crit rate, faster attack speed, and stamina recovery on hit. The catch is that you have to steal it. It's in Lyon Crest Manor, west of Hernand. Normally the manor stays locked until you've cleared the family's side quests. If you don't want to wait, circle around the building, find the small side annex, and climb in through the window with the open shutter. Loot the upstairs chest and it's yours.

Note: to steal anything in Crimson Desert, you need the mask first (more on that below). Without it, crime actions stay locked.

If you prefer one-handed weapons, Empty Face is probably the one you want. It's a quick katana with Abyssal cores focused on crit rate and attack speed. Unlike Wondo, it still lets you run a shield. You do have to travel a bit farther for it though, down south near the big pirate village. Find the long narrow lake on the map, head to its upper end, and you'll see a waterfall.

This is also where the game fails to explain an important trick: you can't pass through waterfalls normally. You need to use Breakthrough (Triangle + R1), the charged attack that breaks enemy guard. That's the only way through. Otherwise you'll just take damage and get pushed back. Remember it, because a lot of Crimson Desert waterfalls hide loot caves.

This is a rank 4 two-handed sword with a downright busted Abyssal core: Dark Wound . Every time you use Rotating Strike (heavy + light combo), it fires a wave of dark projectiles that tears through everything in front of you. Pair it with Lord Stag's Helm for +35% Rotating Strike damage and Kliff turns into a blender.

The catch is that it only unlocks in Chapter 5 at the Sanctuary of Absolution. The boss there uses the exact same move against you, and it hurts. Bring a healthy stack of palm concentrates before you go.

It's smaller than the standard shields, so the raw defense is lower. It makes up for that with +2 attack speed and two Abyssal cores for defense and damage reduction. You get it by finishing the Circus House quest in Chapter 4 after beating Lord Stag northwest of Hernand. It's a side quest, so if you've unlocked faction quests, check that tab in your journal.

This helm boosts Rotating Strike by 35%. That's the perfect match for Dark Pursuit Vessel. The only downside is that it looks enormous on Kliff. If you hate the look, Chapter 5 lets you visit the witches, extract the Abyssal core, and move it onto a helmet you actually like. You'll find it at the Sanctuary of Blessing southwest of Icemore Castle's ruins. Light the statue's lantern to open the hidden door.

This isn't an item strictly speaking, but the advice is worth following. The moment you find a second one-handed sword, equip it in the shield slot. You switch into dual-blade mode with fast combos, high damage, and far better mobility. A lot of players prefer that setup for the later chapters. Note: without a shield, your defense drops and blocked hits still hurt. Get comfortable with counters and perfect parries before you commit to it.

Start with the easiest one to get. Inside Hernand Castle, there's a contribution vendor a lot of players ignore at first. You trade contribution points earned from side quests and regional bounties for gear. Bolton Plate Armor is the cheapest option, and only costs a few faction points. It's solid heavy armor for the early game and, most importantly, it doesn't cost a single ingot. Save your silver for something else.

Same vendor, higher contribution cost. The ceremonial guard breastplate, cape, gloves, and boots all have better stats and they actually look good. You need to clear a few more side quests in the region, but it's worth it if you're planning to stay around Hernand for a while. At minimum, grab the breastplate and the cape.

Mathias is the first real boss in the game. Once he's down, his full armor set becomes available from Hernand's equipment merchant. Kanta Plate Armor can honestly carry you through half the game if you keep upgrading it at the blacksmith. Around enhancement level 7 is when you'll start eyeing replacements, but before that it's hard to beat for the price. The only drawback is the upfront cost, which is why Bolton or the ceremonial guard set makes sense as a stopgap.

Head west of Hernand to the end of the big river. Near a fast-travel point, you'll find a multi-level waterfall. Check each tier and look for a small stone cairn in front of the water. That's the sign that a cave is hidden behind it. Use the same trick as for Empty Face: Breakthrough (Triangle + R1) to punch through. Inside you'll find chests, a refined palm concentrate, and these gloves, whose Abyssal cores improve healing and add a regeneration effect. They're absurdly good for the start of the game.

Same idea, different spot. Stay west, just above the first N in "Hernande" on the map, near a small river. There's another waterfall with a cairn in front of it. Break through, loot the cave, and you'll get the boots. They improve stamina recovery and climbing speed (+2% is not huge, but it's free). There's also a refined palm concentrate nearby. Together with the gloves, that's two Fallen Kingdom pieces without spending a coin, and two less things to buy from the merchant.

Accessories are scarce early on, so a free one matters. Go to Blummont Manor in Hernand, head upstairs, and find the bedroom safe. It's locked behind an owl puzzle: turn the buttons until the owl faces you. Open it and you'll get Oath of Darkness, an earring with bonus defense. It won't redefine your build, but free defense is free defense, and earrings are rare in the opening chapters.

You'll pick up quite a few armor pieces as main-quest rewards. Many of them have worse raw stats than whatever you're already wearing, but don't sell them. Some carry special effects like frost resistance, heat resistance, or stealth bonuses for sneaking through camps. Patch 1.04.00 expanded Private Storage and added two 1,000-slot chests for gatherables and collectibles, so inventory management is less painful now. Since Pearl Abyss has not officially rebalanced any of the 20 picks in this guide, the recommendations still stand.

It is the single most important item in the game. When a boss kills you, you can quit, restart, or use a palm concentrate to come back with 30% health and keep fighting. The key point is that chest drops are limited, but crafting is not.

The recipe is in the Cave of Whispering Shadows, reached through a crack in the cliff near Hernand's great bridge. You'll find a witch there, which matters later in Chapter 5, and more importantly the recipe itself. To craft it, use a witch's cauldron. There's one in the cave and another in Hernand's dye works. You need 3 waters and 15 natural resources. The easy trick is to use horns: you collect loads of them while hunting deer and goats for food. Water comes from grocers, and their stock refreshes daily. You can craft 50, 60, even 70 concentrates. There's no cap, and it changes the game's difficulty curve completely.

Same idea, just better. A refined concentrate revives you with a lot more health than the regular version. You can't craft it, at least not from any known recipe, but you can find it in caves behind waterfalls, especially the ones holding the Fallen Kingdom gloves and boots. Save them for the nastier boss fights.

No mask, no crime. That's how Crimson Desert works. To unlock it, do your first bounty hunt in Hernand. Jeffrey, the guy in town who steals coins when you get near him, is the target. Tackle him, punch him twice, tie him up, and drag him back to the guards near the prison. Your reward is money, contribution, and the mask. Once it's equipped, you can rob chests, houses, and manors. You need it for Wondo and Oath of Darkness.

The basic pickaxe works, but the Mining Knuckle Drill is a huge upgrade. It mines faster and gives you a 10% chance at bonus ore, which climbs to 20% and then 30% if you fully upgrade it. Since ore feeds every weapon and armor upgrade at the blacksmith, every extra node matters. You get it from the quest chain "The Distressed Estate," which starts in front of Blummont Manor in Chapter 2 and sends you to Karen's Quarry north of Hernand to beat Exatron. His drill attack hurts, but it's manageable.

The recipe is simple: one fruit + one piece of meat = braised meat. It restores health and Spirit, and it has the best healing-to-ingredients ratio early on. Meat comes from hunting, which you're already doing for palm concentrate horns, and fruit is all over the wild. Cook a decent stack before every boss.

These three are bundled together because they come from the same area and work best as a package. Horse armor comes from Hernand's contribution shop, the same vendor who sells Bolton's armor. The stirrups and horseshoes come from the stablemaster at the stable just outside town.

• Horse armor — makes your mount much tougher. If your horse suddenly refuses to move, it's probably because it has taken too much damage.
• Stirrups — restore health while you ride. That means fewer healing items wasted on travel.
• Horseshoes — speed up horse stamina recovery. You can gallop longer and recover faster between sprints.

Once you've bought them, open your horse inventory - it's a dedicated tab inside your inventory - and equip them. It takes 30 seconds and makes a real difference to travel.

It's not gear in the strict sense, but it's too useful to leave out. You can adopt a dog in town by raising its friendship to 100. There are two ways to do it: pet it each day (+25 max per day, so four days total) or drop meat on the ground to speed things up. Once adopted, it shows up in the camp's pet menu.

Have it follow you and it will stick with you everywhere, even during main story missions. The big perk is simple: it loots automatically. You no longer need to search every body on the ground. The downside is that it really does grab everything, including junk, so your inventory fills up fast. Clean it out regularly. And yes, the dog is completely invincible. Enemies can't hurt or kill it.

Finding good gear is only half the job. Upgrading it is what makes it last. The blacksmith in Hernand, and later the ones in other cities, lets you improve weapons and armor with ore and a few extra materials. Each tier raises the base stats: attack, defense, and special effects. If you want to know whether a newly found weapon is actually better than what you're using, inspect it and press again to open the upgrade progression chart. That lets you compare both items at the same enhancement level before you switch.

Abyssal cores become editable in Chapter 5 once the witches enter the loop. At that point you can extract a core from one piece of gear, move it to another, or combine effects. Before then, you're stuck with whatever a weapon rolled with, which is why early core quality matters so much.

One balance change does matter here. Patch 1.04.00 reduced the attack and defense gained from grindstone and anvil enhancements. Abyssal cores and each item's built-in effects now carry even more weight, so don't burn your entire ore stock just to push an enhancement number higher.

Yes. Some quest armor pieces have unique effects such as frost resistance, heat resistance, or stealth bonuses that you cannot replace when a specific area calls for them. Patch 1.04.00 expanded Private Storage and added two 1,000-slot chests for gatherables and collectibles, so hanging on to the important pieces is a lot easier now.
