2TB NVMe SSD in 2026: PCIe 4 vs PCIe 5 while prices spike

A 2TB NVMe SSD is not a hard drive. It is an M.2 stick on PCIe. In 2026, 2TB fits Windows, your apps, and a large game library: think 15 to 20 AAA games around 80 to 100 GB, not thirty.

• Form factor: M.2 2280, straight onto the motherboard.
• Interface: PCIe 4.0 is enough for gaming. PCIe 5.0 only makes sense if the premium is small, which it is not in October 2026.
• Capacity: 2TB is still the right step. 1TB fills up fast, and 4TB costs even more in this market.

For most PCs, the best 2TB NVMe SSD is a fast PCIe 4.0 drive, not the most expensive Gen5 in the catalogue.

A 2TB M.2 drive can be SATA or NVMe. SATA tops out around 550 MB/s. Even a PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive (about 3,500 MB/s) is far ahead, and a PCIe 4.0 drive around 7,000 MB/s further still. For a gaming PC in 2026, buy NVMe.

Even a PCIe 3.0 2TB NVMe SSD leaves a SATA SSD behind. In games, the jump that matters is HDD or SATA to NVMe, not PCIe 4 to PCIe 5.

• Windows boot and file copies are much faster than on a hard drive.
• Game load times drop a lot versus an HDD. Past a good PCIe 4.0 drive, a higher sequential ceiling barely changes those loads.
• Video edits and large files: that is where MB/s actually show up.
• No platters or heads, so none of those mechanical failures.
• 2TB is the healthiest space-versus-use step, if you pay for the right generation.

• Up to about 3,500 MB/s.
• Still fine if the motherboard has no Gen4 slot.
• A weaker buy if you are shopping new in 2026.

• About 7,000 to 7,500 MB/s on the drives in this guide.
• This is the gaming standard: the 990 PRO, SN850X, and NM790 all sit here.
• An M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot is enough. You do not need a PCIe 5.0 platform.

• Past 10,000 MB/s. The Crucial T700 2TB is rated up to 12,400 MB/s read and 11,800 MB/s write.
• You need a PCIe 5.0 slot (often the first M.2, wired to the CPU) and a heatsink: these SSDs run hot.
• For gaming, that throughput does not justify the October 2026 price.

Is a PCIe 5 SSD worth it for gaming? Not at this price. Keep Gen5 for heavy sequential copies (video rushes, large projects) if you already have the slot and the premium shrinks.

The T700 is $788, about twice the 990 PRO ($400) and more than twice the NM790 ($340). That gap, not the MB/s figure, decides it for gaming.

The most complete Gen4 pick. Samsung rates it up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, 1,200 TBW, and a 5-year warranty. On 3 October 2026 it starts at $400 on DropReference (€356 before conversion). A strong gaming and creation drive if you want the generation’s reference, not if you only want the lowest price.

The Gen4 gaming alternative. The Sandisk / WD 2TB spec lists up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write, 1,200 TBW, and a 5-year warranty. Catalogue floor: $382 on 3 October 2026 (€340), a bit under the 990 PRO.

990 PRO vs SN850X: in games they are equivalent. Buy whichever is cheaper that day. The 990 PRO’s sequential write is a bit higher (6,900 vs 6,600 MB/s), which matters on large files, not on a game load.

The PCIe 4.0 price step in this comparison. Lexar rates the 2TB up to 7,400 MB/s read and 6,500 MB/s write, with 1,500 TBW and a 5-year warranty. It is the cheapest of the four in the catalogue on 3 October 2026, at $340 (€303). For gaming it does the same job as a 990 PRO or an SN850X.

The cards below use DropReference catalogue EANs. The Crucial T700 2TB is the PCIe 5 counter-example: up to 12,400 / 11,800 MB/s, 1,200 TBW, and 5 years, but $788 on 3 October 2026 (from €702, a single new offer). Do not buy it for gaming unless that premium drops sharply. PCIe 5 SSDs run hot: use the motherboard M.2 heatsink, or the version sold with one.

• Check for an M.2 NVMe (PCIe) slot, not only M.2 SATA. A PCIe 4.0 SSD also runs in a PCIe 3.0 slot, just slower.
• For gaming: PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 only if the board has a real Gen5 slot and the price gap has become reasonable.
• An M.2 heatsink helps on Gen4 under the graphics card, and is strongly recommended on Gen5.

What is the difference between a 2TB M.2 SSD and a 2TB NVMe SSD?

M.2 is the stick format. NVMe is the fast protocol over PCIe. An M.2 drive can also be SATA, which is much slower.

Will a 2TB NVMe SSD work in every motherboard?

No. You need an M.2 PCIe slot. It will not boot in a SATA-only socket. An adapter exists, but a native M.2 slot is the right install.
