Subnautica 2: all the new features to expect before the release on May 14, 2026

subnautica 2 early access May 2026 multiplayer survival game

New planet, 4-player co-op, new creatures, and dynamic ocean currents: let's take stock of all the changes in Subnautica 2.

Subnautica 2 is coming on May 14, and this time it's serious

29.99 dollars. That's the entry price to dive into Subnautica 2 from May 14, 2026 in Early Access on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox (with Game Pass, by the way). Unknown Worlds is not doing things by halves this time: new planet, cooperative multiplayer up to 4, scary creatures we've never seen before, and ocean currents that sweep you away into the depths without warning.

After the monstrous success of the first installment and a Below Zero that had divided the community — too short, too terrestrial, map too small — this sequel is under pressure. And from what we know, the devs have clearly listened to the feedback.

We go through all the confirmed news. No random rumors, only concrete information taken from trailers, developer interviews, and the official Steam page.

Zazura: a new planet, a new nightmare

Forget planet 4546B. Subnautica 2 takes place on Zazura , a completely new oceanic world. The scenario? You are one of the passengers on the CICADA , a colony ship from Alterra carrying 40,000 people. To put things in perspective, it's 250 times larger than the Aurora from the first game. And as usual with Alterra, it goes wrong.

The crash of CICADA is described as the worst accident in Alterra's history. Your mission: survive, understand what happened, and - let's be honest - try not to end up in the stomach of a Leviathan.

Anthony Gallegos, the Design Lead at Unknown Worlds, explained why they chose an unknown planet instead of returning to 4546B: "If we went back to the same planet, players would feel safe. They would already know the creatures, biomes, dangers." On Zazura, an unknown sound can be a friend or a predator. This uncertainty is the heart of Subnautica.

The lore is discovered by exploring: audio logs of the CICADA crew, underwater ruins, missions sent by mysterious sources. If you liked the narrative atmosphere of the first one, it should step up a notch.

The coop has 4 players, the feature everyone was waiting for

It is probably THE novelty that makes the most noise. Subnautica 2 offers a cooperative multiplayer mode for up to 4 players , available from the launch in Early Access. You can also play solo, of course — the solo mode remains intact.

The devs have added a proximity-based inventory sharing system: if you are close to an allied locker, you can pick up resources from it while crafting. No complicated menu, no Minecraft-style trading system - it's smooth and integrated.

So yes, the first solo Subnautica had this oppressive side, this terrifying loneliness at the bottom of the ocean. Will the coop break that? Maybe a little. But honestly, going down to 800 meters deep with a buddy and hearing a roar in the dark... it's still scary. And at least, you can share the panic.

A living ocean that won't give you any gifts

The most subtle but potentially the most impactful change: the dynamic ocean currents In the first Subnautica, the water was generally static. You swam where you wanted, at your own pace. Here, some currents can grab you and take you much deeper than expected. Imagine: you are peacefully exploring a reef at 200 meters, and a downward current sucks you down to 500 meters in one go. Welcome to the danger zone.

On the bestiary side, Unknown Worlds promises entirely new creatures. We have seen in the trailers the giant crabs and of massive squids that have nothing to do with what we saw in previous games. The Leviathans are back, but they are new species. No Reaper Leviathan here — and it's maybe even worse, because we don't know what to expect.

Developers insist that depth is directly related to danger. The deeper you go, the more hostile it becomes. This was already the case before, but here the environments are designed so that each depth level is a real increase in tension.

Basic construction and crafting: we are going for an improved classic

No revolution announced on base building and crafting, but some improvements in quality of life inspired by other recent survival games. Unknown Worlds admitted to having looked at what worked well with the competition to address the annoyances of the first installment.

We find the Prawn Suit (the underwater mecha), confirmed since Early Access. For vehicles, there are no precise details yet on possible replacements for the Seamoth or the Cyclops. This is something to keep an eye on - Below Zero had replaced these two vehicles with the Seatruck, and opinions were very divided.

What we know: craft tools are confirmed, the construction of custom bases as well, and everything works in coop. Building a base with 4, each specialized in a role - one who farms resources, one who builds, one who explores caves while the last one keeps watch against the Leviathans - has potential.

Early Access: what is included and what will come after

Unknown Worlds has been transparent about the content of the Early Access at launch. Here's what is confirmed:

  • Several biomes playable from day 1 (exact number not specified)
  • 4-player coop mode + alone
  • Various creatures including Leviathans
  • Start of the narration (complete story planned for version 1.0)
  • Craft and base building functional

The studio plans 2 to 3 years of Early Access before version 1.0. During this period, major updates will add new biomes, creatures, mechanics, and narrative chapters. The price will increase after the EA release — so buying now at $29.99 is the best deal. All future updates up to 1.0 are included.

An important point that developers repeat: player feedback will directly influence development. This has been their method since the first Subnautica. They have an active Discord and promise to share their mistakes as well as their successes. In short, it's Early Access in the true sense of the term — not "we release a broken game and we'll see."

The PC specs: what you need to dive

Component Minimum (1080p) Recommended
System Windows 10/11 Windows 11
Processor Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Intel Core i7-13700 / AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
RAM 12 GB 16 GB
Graphics card GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB / RX 5500 XT 6 GB GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB / RX 6700 XT 8 GB
Storage 50 GB 50 GB
Graphic API DirectX 12 DirectX 12

No major surprises on the specs side. The game runs on an in-house engine (not Unity this time, unlike the first two), and the recommended configurations are reasonable. An RTX 3070 or an RX 6700 XT with 16GB of RAM is a classic mid-range setup in 2026. If you have a PC that can run the first Subnautica properly, you should be able to launch this one by lowering a few settings.

The point to note: 12 GB of RAM minimum With the current DRAM crisis - Samsung redirecting all its production towards HBM for AI, DDR5 prices that have tripled in a few months -, it's the kind of detail that can sting if you have to upgrade. Below Zero vs Subnautica 2: the lessons learned

We cannot talk about Subnautica 2 without mentioning Below Zero and its missteps. The DLC-sequel had disappointed part of the community for several reasons: a map significantly smaller than the original, too many land areas that broke the rhythm, the Seatruck that didn't really replace the Seamoth/Cyclops duo, and a shorter and less impactful storyline.

Subnautica 2 seems to correct the shot on almost all of these points. Back to 100% aquatic exploration (at least from what we've seen), an entire planet to discover rather than just a polar area, and a much broader narrative ambition with the mystery of CICADA. Co-op adds a dimension that players have been asking for since the first game.

The big unknown remains: will the Early Access be rich enough in content to justify the purchase on day 1? The devs say yes, but we have seen promising Early Access projects collapse. Unknown Worlds has a good track record - the first Subnautica spent 3 years in Early Access and came out as a masterpiece. We want to believe that they know what they are doing.

Is Subnautica 2 coming out on PS5?
