Ryzen 5 5500F at €100: is PCIe 4.0 enough compared to the Ryzen 5 5600?

AMD is once again reviving the AM4 with the Ryzen 5 5500F. Its PCIe 4.0 corrects the flaw of the 5500, but its price places it dangerously close to the Ryzen 5 5600.

AM4 still refuses to die

The AM4 socket is ten years old and AMD has just given it a new processor. The Ryzen 5 5500F was launched on September 10, 2026 with six Zen 3 cores, twelve threads and a French price starting at €99.95. On paper, it looks like yet another recycling of the Ryzen 5000 range. Except that one detail really changes the game: PCI Express 4.0.

This is precisely what was missing from the Ryzen 5 5500. The latter remains stuck in PCIe 3.0, a flaw that has become more bothersome with recent graphics cards wired in only eight lanes, like the GeForce RTX 5060. The 5500F avoids this trap. Finally, provided you have the right motherboard.

No miracle for that. Its L3 cache remains limited to 16 MB and no complete independent test of the 5500F was available at the time of writing these lines. We will therefore separate what AMD confirms, what the measurements on RTX 5060 demonstrate, and what can be reasonably expected in gaming.

Ryzen 5 5500F: the official specifications

AMD announces a chip Zen 3 etched in 7 nm , with 6 cores and 12 threads. The base frequency is 3.0 GHz, while the boost reaches 4.4 GHz. The TDP remains fixed at 65 W, the multiplier is unlocked and the boxed version comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler.

The processor uses the AM4 socket and DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s. It has no integrated graphics circuit: a dedicated graphics card is mandatory. AMD refers to it as a Vermeer chip, but with only 16 MB of L3 cache. This is unusual, as the Vermeer-based Ryzen 5 5600 and 5600X have 32 MB. As long as a teardown or a tool like CPU-Z does not confirm its internal configuration, it is better to stick to the official specifications.

Compared to the classic 5500, the frequencies are curious: the 5500F starts lower, at 3.0 GHz against 3.6 GHz, but climbs 200 MHz higher in boost. Against the Ryzen 5 5600, it retains the same peak at 4.4 GHz, while losing half of the L3 cache. And this cache matters a lot in certain games.

PCIe 4.0, the real innovation

The AMD specification is unambiguous: the Ryzen 5 5500F supports the PCIe 4.0 with 24 native lanes, of which 20 are usable . It is a major difference with the 5500, limited to PCIe 3.0.

Why worry? A x16 graphics card still maintains a decent bandwidth on an old PCIe 3.0 link. A RTX 5060, on the other hand, only uses eight lanes. On a Gen3 platform, it therefore operates in PCIe 3.0 x8, which is about 7.9 GB/s in each direction. PCIe 4.0 x8 doubles this theoretical throughput.

Beware of the shortcut: twice the bandwidth does not mean twice the FPS. The gain depends on the game, the amount of data exchanged, and the pressure on the 8 GB of VRAM of the RTX 5060. But when the bus becomes the bottleneck, the loss is very real.

With a RTX 5060, the 5500F makes more sense than the 5500

Digital Foundry measured the RTX 5060 in PCIe 5.0 and then in PCIe 3.0. At 1080p, Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle goes from 100.29 to 92.77 FPS, F1 24 from 82.77 to 75.79 FPS, and Black Myth: Wukong from 49.44 to 43.51 FPS. The loss therefore ranges from about 7.5 to 12% in these three cases.

These figures are not not a test of the Ryzen 5 5500F . They isolate the effect of the bus on another platform. They nevertheless show why the PCIe 4.0 of the new CPU is relevant: on a compatible motherboard, the RTX 5060 does not suffer from the bottleneck of PCIe 3.0 x8.

The trap: not all AM4 motherboards provide PCIe 4.0

AMD lists the X570, X470, X370, B550, B450, B350, and A520 chipsets as compatible with the 5500F. This does not mean that each will provide PCIe 4.0 to the GPU. In practice, it is mainly necessary to aim for a B550 or an X570 with a main slot wired in Gen4.

On a B450, an A520 or most series 300 motherboards, the RTX 5060 will generally remain in PCIe 3.0 x8, even if the processor can handle Gen4. The 5500F will work, but its most interesting advantage will disappear.

A compatible BIOS will also be necessary. Before purchasing, check the CPU support list published by your motherboard manufacturer, with the exact model and the required BIOS version. A simple mention "Ryzen 5000 compatible" on the box does not yet guarantee support for this new reference released in 2026.

Gaming performance: probably between 5500 and 5600

It would be tempting to present the 5500F as a small Ryzen 5 5600. That would be going too fast. Both reach 4.4 GHz, but the 5600 has 32 MB of L3 cache compared to 16 MB here. In cache-sensitive games and in CPU-limited scenes, this gap can weigh more than 200 MHz of boost.

The previous tests of the Ryzen 5 5500 give a rough idea. TechSpot measured the Ryzen 5 5600 to be about 17% faster with a Radeon RX 6950 XT in a scenario very limited by the CPU, and then only 7% faster with a RX 6600 XT. The GPU and resolution therefore significantly change the result.

Our cautious estimate: the 5500F should remain closer to the 5500 than to the 5600 in CPU-limited games, with a slight bonus related to its higher boost. Its PCIe 4.0 can, however, give it an additional advantage with an RTX 5060 or another x8 card. We will have to wait for real benchmarks of the model to put a serious percentage on it.

At €100, the Ryzen 5 5600 ruins the party for him

On September 11, 2026, LDLC Belgium lists the Ryzen 5 5500F at €99.95 in tray version, while Materiel.net offers the boxed version with Wraith Stealth at €114.95. At the same time, the Ryzen 5 5500 is found around €91.95 at LDLC and the Ryzen 5 5600 starts at €104.95 in bulk version.

And there, the verdict is brutal. If a Ryzen 5 5600 costs only five or ten euros more, take the 5600. Its doubled L3 cache makes it a better gaming processor and it also retains PCIe 4.0. The 5500F becomes interesting around 85 to 90 € , or if a boxed version with a cooler is significantly cheaper than a 5600 accompanied by a separate cooling solution.

The classic 5500 only keeps one argument: the floor price. With a PCIe x16 graphics card or an old Gen3 config, its bus handicap is less significant. With an RTX 5060 x8, saving eight euros to lose PCIe 4.0 is frankly a bad calculation.

Who is this new CPU really interesting for?

The best use case is simple: you already own a B550 or X570 motherboard, 16 or 32 GB of DDR4, and an old Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5. A 5500F for less than €90 allows you to extend the machine without buying a new motherboard and memory.

  • Good purchase : upgrade of a Ryzen 3 3100, 3300X or an old quad-core AM4 with a RTX 4060, RTX 5060 or mid-range Radeon.
  • Negotiable purchase: complete new config if the Ryzen 5 5600 is almost at the same price.
  • To avoid: motherboard limited to PCIe 3.0 if your main goal is precisely to avoid the x8 penalty of a RTX 5060.

Our verdict on the Ryzen 5 5500F

AMD has fixed the most annoying flaw of the Ryzen 5 5500. PCIe 4.0 makes the 5500F much more logical with a RTX 5060 and other recent graphics cards limited to eight lanes. Six cores, twelve threads, 65 W and a cooler in the boxed version: the recipe remains healthy for a cheap 1080p setup.

But the French launch price is not aggressive enough yet. At €99.95 in tray or €114.95 in box, it is too close to the Ryzen 5 5600, which retains 32 MB of L3 cache and better gaming performance. The 5500F is a good idea at €85-90. At €100 and above, the 5600 remains our choice.

Does the Ryzen 5 5500F have an integrated graphics circuit?

No. AMD indicates that a dedicated graphics card is mandatory. The suffix F confirms this absence.

Does the Ryzen 5 5500F really support PCIe 4.0?

Yes. The official AMD specification mentions PCIe 4.0, with 24 native lanes and 20 usable. However, the motherboard must be Gen4 compatible to take advantage of it.

Is it suitable for a RTX 5060?

Yes for a balanced 1080p config, especially on B550 or X570. PCIe 4.0 avoids the Gen3 x8 limitation observed in some games with the RTX 5060.

Should you choose the 5500F or the Ryzen 5 5600?
