Crimson Desert: all endings, the hidden ending, and the choices that truly matter

crimson desert fins hidden end axiom archive explained kliff story

Standard end, hidden end of the Axiom Archive, time loop of the 108 attempts... We dissect everything that the Crimson Desert scenario doesn't explain to you.

How many endings in Crimson Desert?

You just finished chapter 12, the credits are rolling, and you find yourself with more questions than answers. Normal. Crimson Desert doesn't hold your hand when it comes to the story - you have to go look for the lore yourself.

Contrary to what one might think, the game does not offer no multiple choice system in The Witcher 3 . The main story is linear from the Prologue to the Epilogue. No narrative branches, no "good" or "bad" endings based on your dialogues. However, there are two distinct ends : the standard ending and a much more complete hidden ending that recontextualizes Kliff's entire story.

And that's where it gets interesting. Because the hidden ending literally changes your understanding of the game.

The standard end: what happens in chapter 12

The main campaign follows Kliff through a Prologue, 12 chapters, and an Epilogue Here is the quick summary of the structure:

  • Prologue (Dead of Night) — The Greymanes are being massacred by the Black Bears. Kliff is killed by their leader and wakes up in the Abyss.
  • Chapters 1 to 7 — Kliff returns with powers, helps Hernand, rebuilds the Greymanes on Howling Hill, recruits allies.
  • Chapters 8 to 11 The conflict is escalating. Blood Coronation, betrayals, the Sage of the Desert, and the counterattack.
  • Chapter 12 (The Abyss) — The final assault on Fort Musket. Caliburn flees into the Abyss, Kliff pursues him.

The final boss is Corrupted Caliburn (Gabriel Caliburn) The battle takes place in the Abyss after solving the Monolith Crown puzzle. Caliburn summons clones, attacks with long combos — the key is to dodge sideways and punish after each sequence. No parrying here, you have to roll.

Once Caliburn is defeated, Kliff tells Oongka and Yann to take care of Damiane while he pursues him into the portal. The final cinematic shows Kliff rejecting control of Caliburn — "I still have a face" — and the fight concludes.

Except that this ending doesn't explain anything to you. Why did Kliff survive the Abyss? What is White Crow? Who is Goyen? Why did Caliburn become like this? All these questions remain unanswered. And that's intentional.

The hidden end: the Axiom Archive and the 108 attempts

This is where Crimson Desert goes from "good action-RPG" to "wait, what?!". The hidden ending reveals that Kliff's entire story is actually the 108th attempt of a time loop orchestrated by entities called White Crow and Alustin.

To access it, you must meet two conditions:

  1. Complete the main story — Prologue, 12 chapters and Epilogue.
  2. Complete the 40 Abyssal Challenges — Including the Dimensional Bonds from chapter 12. However, the 4 puzzles of the Eternal Corridor (bottom right of the Abyss map) are not mandatory.

Yeah, 40 challenges. It's not insignificant. It will take you through all the regions of the game, on the ground and in the Abyss. In return, you'll get tons of Abyssal Artifacts, Abyss Gear, and hidden chests.

How to unlock the secret scene

Once the 40 challenges are completed, head to the Axiom Archive in the Abyss. You know the place — it's the first Abyss zone you visit in chapter 1. Since you've already been there, the Nexus is unlocked. Teleport directly, no need to go back through the door of Hernand Castle.

  1. Enter the library from the Axiom Archive.
  2. Go to the 3rd floor with the Axiom Force (Spirit Skills like Aerial Force Palm are blocked here).
  3. Pick up and read the 6 books on the shelves. Attention: scan each page carefully (left + right). The 6 volumes contain a total of 42 knowledge entries.

The last book read triggers the hidden final scene. Kliff, aged and weakened after his battle in the Abyss, touches a golden artifact cube which restores it to its youth. This is the true canon conclusion of the game.

The lore explained: White Crow, Umbra, and the 107 failures

The 6 books of the Archive tell the other side of the story. And frankly, it blows your mind.

Shadow is an entity corrupted by human darkness. It devours everything and retains its memories through time resets. The first text of the Archive says: The time jump allowed us to escape Umbra, but it didn't change anything. Umbra will surely arrive in this era again.

White Crow and Alustin are guardians who manipulate the timeline to create a hero capable of stopping Umbra. They made 107 attempts before yours. Each attempt = a different Kliff, with different emotions, companions, and paths. And each time, it's a failure.

Some examples taken directly from the Archives:

  • Attempt 17 — They tried to make Kearush an ally of Kliff. Result: humans locked him up in a zoo, he lost it and massacred everyone around.
  • Attempt 45 — After the loss of his comrades, Kliff continued alone and adopted the name Goyen. Yes, Goyen is Kliff in a failed loop.
  • Attempt 62 — They removed his fear. He threw himself at enemies too strong and he died. When they reinforced his sense of responsibility, he spent his life wandering the world to "eliminate any threat".
  • Attempt 66 — Each emotion led him to failure. Solution of the guardians: extract all his emotions. Result... even worse.
  • Attempt 82 — Duane betrayed. Shane made everything collapse. The Greymanes scattered. Goyen found himself in the void.
  • Attempt 98 — The click. The guardians finally realize that kindness, sincerity, and empathy are what forge true bonds. Not brute force.

And Caliburn in all this? Entry 77 reveals that it is a incarnation of Umbra . Umbra was doing exactly the same thing as White Crow: looking for someone to oppose destiny. Except her champion is Caliburn.

Attempt 108 - your turn - is the one where everything finally aligns. Kliff helps the people of the village, makes small gestures, builds real relationships. And that's what makes the difference.

Goyen, it's Kliff: the revelation of hidden lore

One of the biggest twists of the game is Goyen's identity. If you played without reading the Archives, you think it's a separate NPC. But no.

Goyen is Kliff in a previous loop. Entry 45 of the Archives clearly states: After the loss of his comrades, he pressed forward alone and adopted the name Goyen. In this failed timeline, Kliff lost all his companions, wandered alone, became Goyen, and ended up "wandering in the void, neither alive nor dead" (entry 47).

The Steam community has confirmed this interpretation: Goyen is a Kliff from another loop who got trapped in the Abyss. This means that when you encounter Goyen in the game, you are facing a version of yourself who has failed. Pretty cool as a mise en abyme.

Moreover, entry 99 confirms that the guardians asked Goyen to "guide his younger mind" — that is to say you, the current Kliff. Goyen helps you in the game because he knows exactly what you are going through. He has already experienced it. And failed.

Hexe Marie and the Corrupted Fragment of White Crow

Another revelation that many players miss: Hexe Marie was born from a fragment of White Crow devoured by Umbra . The entry 2 of the Archives says: Umbra managed to devour a fragment of White Crow. Her uncorrupted half is alive and still aids us, but the fractured essence disappeared into the land below.

This fragment has become Hexe Marie, the Black Witch that you face in Chapter 9. Entry 18 specifies that she developed an obsession for Kliff — she wants to make him "her son". That's why her fight is so personal and her dialogues are also emotionally charged.

Marni too is a mystery. Entry 48 of the Archives is surprised by his presence: "A man named Marni began appearing at his side. He has introduced excessive technology into the world. Marni... Just who is this man?" Even the guards don't know where it comes from. It's probably a thread for a future DLC.

The choices that matter (and those that make no difference)

Let's be clear about this: Crimson Desert is not a multiple-choice RPG . Your dialogues, your faction alliances, your side missions — none of that changes the ending. The main campaign lasts about 50 hours and remains the same for everyone.

What changes is what you complete or not:

  • Damiane and Oongka Arches — Completing their dedicated quests enriches the conclusion and gives access to additional layers of the narrative. Some sources speak of an "ultimate ending" only accessible by completing these arcs (~80 hours of total gameplay).
  • The 40 Abyssal Challenges — Mandatory for the hidden end of the Axiom Archive.
  • Factions and fortresses — Camp takeovers and alliances provide loot, lore, and bonus missions, but do not create exclusive narrative branches.
  • The Knowledge menu — A lot of narrative context is hidden in the Knowledge menu. Jian's story, the characters' backgrounds... If you don't read these entries, the main story seems disjointed.

Good news: there is almost no missable quest The game is designed so that you can do everything in the order you want without getting soft-locked. Even if you ignore the main story for 30 hours to explore, the world adapts.

FAQ

How many endings does Crimson Desert have?

Two endings: the standard ending (accessible by completing the 12 chapters + the Epilogue) and the hidden ending (which requires the 40 Abyssal Challenges + the 6 books of the Axiom Archive).

Do dialogue choices change the ending?

No. The main campaign is linear. Your answers in the dialogues do not impact the outcome. What determines your ending is your completion level (abyssal challenges, companion arcs).

Who is Goyen in Crimson Desert?

Goyen is a version of Kliff from a previous time loop (the 45th attempt). After losing all his companions, he wandered alone and adopted this name. He is trapped in the Abyss and guides the current Kliff.

What is the loop of 108 attempts?

White Crow and Alustin have restarted timeline 107 times to shape a hero capable of defeating Umbra. Your game is the 108th attempt, the first one to succeed thanks to Kliff's empathy and human connections.

Can we continue playing after the end?

Yes. After the credits (standard or hidden ending), you are placed back in the open world of Pywel to finish the side quests, challenges, and exploration.

Is Hexe Marie linked to White Crow?

Yes. The Axiom Archives reveal that Hexe Marie was born from a fragment of White Crow corrupted by Umbra. She is essentially the corrupted half of White Crow that has taken human form.

Should the Eternal Corridor be completed for the hidden ending?

No. The 4 Abyss puzzles of the Eternal Corridor (bottom right of the Abyss map, accessible from Marni's mansion) are not required to unlock the hidden ending.

What the hidden ending changes in your understanding of the game

The standard ending of Crimson Desert is correct. You defeat Caliburn, you save your friends, that's good. But without the Archives of the Axiom, you miss 80% of what Pearl Abyss wanted to tell.

The loop of the 108 attempts puts everything into perspective. Every moment where the game pushes you to help a villager, to create a bond, to make a "small gesture" — it's not filler. It's literally what makes your attempt the one that succeeds where 107 have failed. The guardians tried everything: force, fear, competition, indifference. Nothing worked. It's the simplicity of empathy that makes the difference.

And Marni? The guardians themselves do not know who he is. It smells like a setup for a DLC all over.

If you haven't completed the 40 challenges yet, you have a good reason to dive back into Pywel. The story really only begins after the credits.
