Phantom Blade Zero finally has a release date

September 9, 2026. It's official. S-Game took advantage of the Game Awards 2025 to release a trailer and confirm what everyone has been waiting for since the announcement in 2023: Phantom Blade Zero is coming to PC (Steam + Epic) and PS5 this fall.

For those who are new, Phantom Blade Zero is a wuxia action RPG developed by S-Game, a Chinese studio that had already worked on the mobile series Phantom Blade. Except that here, we are talking about something much more ambitious: Unreal Engine 5, full motion capture for combat choreographies, and a dark-wuxia universe that mixes martial arts and machinery. The kind of project that has been turning heads since its first trailer.

The story: 66 days to survive

You embody Soul, an elite assassin of the organization The Order. Problem: you get betrayed and poisoned. Result? You have 66 days to live . Not 67, not 65. Sixty-six. And in this time frame, you must discover who betrayed you, unravel a massive conspiracy in the world of martial arts, and — incidentally — try not to die.

The pitch is simple but effective. What makes the thing interesting is that S-Game promises 8 different fins — more than Elden Ring and its 6 endings. And they do not depend on binary choices at the end of the game. It's the way you explore, the side quests you do (or not), the items you pick up along the way that determine which ending you unlock. A bit like Mass Effect, basically: your exploration rigor has a direct impact on the outcome.

On the lifespan side, S-Game announces 20 to 30 hours for the main campaign , plus 20 hours of secondary content. So about 50 hours to complete. It's half as much as Elden Ring, but it's clearly an intentional choice — the studio prefers a dense and fast-paced game rather than a sprawling open world.

A combat system that does not joke

This is where Phantom Blade Zero wants to stand out. We are talking about ultra-fast action combat, somewhere between Ninja Gaiden and Sekiro, with a touch of spectacle like Devil May Cry. Previews are unanimous: it's fast . Very fast.

Concretely, Soul fights with two main blades — each with its own skill tree and an ultimate attack ("power surge"). In addition to that, you have access to two Phantom Edges , secondary weapons ranging from cannons to lances, as well as axes and hammers. In total, the game offers more than 30 main weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges There is plenty to vary the pleasures.

The system is based on the sha-chi — an energy gauge that depletes when you block heavy attacks. Enemy attacks are color-coded: the brutal blows (which drain your sha-chi if you block) and the fatal blows (that needs to be dodged, period). If you successfully parry or dodge at the right timing, you trigger a ghosting — teleportation behind the enemy. The kind of mechanic that makes combat extremely satisfying once mastered.

Wall-running, cinematic finishers, skill trees by weapon... S-Game didn't skimp. And all of this is captured in motion capture with real martial arts practitioners. The result on screen is stunning — the animations have a weight and fluidity that are rarely seen in the genre.

Four levels of difficulty and a boss rush

Good news for those who have been traumatized by Sekiro: Phantom Blade Zero offers four difficulty modes — Easy, Normal, Difficult, and Very Difficult. No gatekeeping here. Do you want to enjoy the story without stressing out? Easy is there for that. Do you want to suffer? Very Difficult awaits you.

Another nice detail: bosses in two phases have a checkpoint between phases If you die in phase 2, you start over in phase 2 — no need to redo the whole phase 1. It's the kind of quality of life that seems obvious in 2026, but that many games of the genre still ignore.

And for the hardcore gamers, S-Game has confirmed a Boss Rush mode which allows you to replay all the campaign bosses, plus hidden bosses exclusive to this mode. Enough to keep perfectionists busy for a while.

A semi-open world under Unreal Engine 5

Phantom Blade Zero doesn't go for the classic open world. The studio has opted for a semi-open world with interconnected regions — a bit in the spirit of the Souls, actually. No giant empty map with icons everywhere. The areas are dense, with multiple paths that sometimes unlock thanks to new weapons or abilities.

On the technical side, it's Unreal Engine 5 with all that implies: Nanite, Lumen, dynamic lighting... The screenshots and trailers show a pretty crazy level of detail, especially in the environments. The mix of traditional Chinese architecture and steampunk machinery gives it a strong visual identity — you don't confuse Phantom Blade Zero with another game.

Should we go hyper for Phantom Blade Zero?

Honestly? Yes, but with caution. On paper, Phantom Blade Zero ticks all the boxes: a combat system that looks phenomenal, unique artistic direction, a well-thought-out semi-open world, and a studio that clearly has ambition. The fact that the game made a strong impression at each presentation - PlayStation Showcase 2023, Gamescom 2024, Game Awards 2025 - is a pretty good sign.

But well, we know the song. We have already seen games promise the moon in a trailer and disappoint on release. S-Game is a relatively young studio on the AAA scene, and moving from mobile to triple-A is quite a leap. The real test will be the first hands-on previews in the coming months.

What is certain is that September 2026 is going to be hot. Between Phantom Blade Zero and the other releases scheduled for the fall, it's going to hurt the wallet. Put it on your Steam wishlist in the meantime — pre-orders should open in the coming months.

The price has not yet been officially announced. Given the game's AAA positioning, one can expect something around €70-80 for the standard edition. Preorders are not yet open.
