Wireless keyboards long had a reputation for lag. That is no longer true for gaming models: with a dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver they feel like a wired keyboard in game, while freeing up your desk.

The advantages:

• A cleaner desk and more room for your mouse
• Two wireless modes on every model we picked: 2.4 GHz for gaming, Bluetooth for everything else
• A USB cable is always there to play wired while charging
• Compact sizes (TKL, 75%, 60%) that are easy to move around

Be careful though: an office wireless keyboard is not a gaming keyboard. For gaming you want a 2.4 GHz mode with a dongle, suitable switches and battery life that lasts the week.

• Classic mechanical (linear, tactile or clicky): the most common choice, with good feedback.
• Low profile: shorter travel and a thinner keyboard (Logitech G915 X and G515 range).
• Magnetic (Hall effect): per-key adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger, as on the SteelSeries Apex Pro.
• Optical: light-based detection, like the GX switches on the Logitech G Pro X 60.
• Hot-swap: some models let you change switches without soldering (ASUS Scope II 96, Corsair K65 Plus, Aula F75).

• 2.4 GHz (USB dongle): the mode to use for gaming, with the lowest latency.
• Bluetooth: handy for a laptop, tablet or second PC, but avoid it for competitive play.

This is where models differ most. RGB lighting has a big impact: the Logitech G915 X TKL is rated for 42 hours at 100% RGB but up to 1,000 hours with lighting off, and the ASUS Scope II 96 Wireless goes beyond 1,500 hours on 2.4 GHz with lighting off. On the other hand, the magnetic-switch SteelSeries boards last around 30 to 45 hours with default lighting. Always check the conditions behind the figure.

• Full size (100%) or 96%: keeps the numpad, ideal if you game and work on the same keyboard.
• TKL: no numpad, more mouse room, all function keys and arrows kept.
• 75%: even more compact while keeping the arrows and F row.
• 60%: ultra compact, no arrows or F row (reachable through key combinations).

Per-key RGB is available on every model we picked. It looks great, but it drains the battery: lower the brightness to charge less often.

Magnetic Hall effect switches are now well established in high-end wireless keyboards: adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger and two actions per key, as on the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless Gen 3 and Apex Pro Mini Wireless. The trade-off is battery life, which is shorter than on classic mechanical boards.

Wireless polling rates are also going up, with up to 4,000 Hz quoted for the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro 75%, for example. For the vast majority of players, a good 1,000 Hz 2.4 GHz mode is more than enough.

The pick for demanding FPS players: OmniPoint 3.0 magnetic switches with 40 actuation levels, Rapid Trigger, an OLED screen and a magnetic wrist rest. Its weak point is battery life: 37.5 hours on 2.4 GHz and 45 hours on Bluetooth with default lighting, according to the figures reported by Trusted Reviews. Note that Rapid Tap (SOCD) is banned on official Counter-Strike 2 servers.

Logitech’s entry point into wireless low profile: a 22 mm thick TKL, PBT keycaps, tactile or linear switches, 2.4 GHz Lightspeed and Bluetooth. Logitech quotes up to 36 hours of battery life from its 1,500 mAh battery.

A well-equipped mid-range 75%: pre-lubed MLX Red linear switches (a tactile MLX Fusion version exists), hot-swap PCB, two layers of sound dampening and a multi-function dial. Corsair rates it for up to 266 hours on 2.4 GHz with lighting off.

The value pick in 75%: gasket mount, five layers of dampening, pre-lubed hot-swap switches, a knob, three connection modes and a large 4,000 mAh battery. The software is simpler than the big brands’, but the typing feel is highly rated for the money. Check the layout on the listing before you buy.

The 60% for competitive players: adjustable OmniPoint 2.0 magnetic switches, Rapid Trigger and two actions per key, aluminium top plate and PBT keycaps. Rated battery life is 30 hours on 2.4 GHz and 40 hours on Bluetooth with default lighting. No arrows or F row: that is the price of compactness.

Designed with esports players in mind, the Pro X 60 relies on GX optical switches, a carrying case and KEYCONTROL to stack shortcuts. Logitech quotes up to 65 hours of battery life (1,500 mAh battery), with 2.4 GHz Lightspeed, Bluetooth and USB.

Still unsure? Here is what really separates them:

• Latency: on 2.4 GHz, the gap with a wired keyboard is not noticeable for the vast majority of players. Avoid Bluetooth for gaming.
• Charging: you have to remember to charge, but every model we picked can be used plugged in.
• Weight and price: at the same tier, the wireless version usually costs more and weighs a little more because of the battery.
• Comfort: cleaner desk, easy to move, one keyboard for several devices thanks to Bluetooth.

In short: if you play competitively and never want to think about the battery, wired is still an option. For everyone else, a 2.4 GHz wireless gaming keyboard is an excellent choice.
