A simple concept that changes the racing experience

Do you know that moment at kilometer 30 of a marathon where you just want to let go of everything? Or that Sunday morning 10K where motivation is lacking as early as kilometer 4? Cobbr attacks exactly that. The idea is almost stupid because it's so obvious: your loved ones record voice messages of encouragement for you, and the app triggers them automatically during your run at the kilometer they have chosen.

No AI-generated virtual coach. No robot voice. The real voice of your girlfriend, your buddy, your mom giving you a "Come on, buddy, don't give up!" just when you need it. And honestly, when you're struggling halfway through a half marathon, hearing someone you really know - it's nothing like a generic push notification.

The smart thing: your loved ones don't even need to install anything. They receive a link, record their message from the browser, choose the km, and it's done. Zero friction for supporters.

How does it work in practice

The operation consists of four steps. Really four, not the kind of "4 simple steps" that hide twelve.

You create your race in the app. Cobbr offers hundreds of official events — marathons, half marathons, 10K, trails — where you can create your own personal race. A Tuesday evening training, a challenge between friends, whatever.

2. You share your link. A unique link that you send to your family, friends, colleagues. By SMS, WhatsApp, whatever you want. On their side, no app to install — everything happens in the browser.

3. They record a message for you. Each person records a 30-second maximum voice message and chooses at which kilometer it triggers. Your best friend at km 1 to warm you up, your sister at km 21 for a boost, your father at the last km to finish beautifully - it's up to them.

4. D-Day, you run and you listen. The app uses your phone's GPS. When you reach the defined kilometer, the message automatically plays in your headphones. And it works even if you are listening to music or a podcast at the same time — Cobbr overlays without cutting off your audio.

Why it's relevant if you're in the gaming community

Let's not lie: the "gamer who runs" profile is more common than we think. Many players have taken up running in recent years, whether to compensate for the hours spent sitting, for cardio, or simply because it's the most accessible sport in the world — you put on your sneakers and off you go.

And if you're in a group of gamer friends where some do running, Cobbr becomes a pretty cool community tool. Imagine: your Discord squad recording messages for your first half marathon. The guy who rages in ranked and shouts "RUN FASTER" at km 15. Or the wholesome version with a real heartfelt message at the last kilometer.

It's free, it takes two minutes to set up, and your friends don't need to install anything. In other words, even the laziest friend in your group can participate.

What the app does well

Cobbr's big strength is simplicity. No account to create for supporters, no convoluted process. One link, one mic, one km, done. In a world where every app wants you to create 14 accounts and connect three social networks, it feels good.

The audio integration is also well thought out. The fact that messages overlap with your music or podcast without cutting everything off, that's the kind of detail that shows the devs are runners themselves. Anyone who has ever had a notification cut off their podcast while running knows how annoying it is.

The GPS trigger is automatic — no need to touch your phone during the race. You launch the app at the start, and everything is managed automatically. It supports all distances: 5K, 10K, half, marathon, trail, ultra. And you can also create personal races for your training.

Since version 1.0.3, you can choose between kilometers and miles, and limit the number of messages received on race day — handy if you have a family that's a little too enthusiastic.

Limits to be aware of

Let's be honest about what is missing for now. Cobbr is only on iOS (iPhone and iPad). If you are on Android, you will have to wait - the Google Play version is announced but not yet available in May 2026. This is the main obstacle, especially when we know that the gaming community leans more towards Android.

The app is still young. 5 stars on the French App Store but only on 7 reviews — so it's promising without being an absolute guarantee. No social features like rankings or stats sharing for now, but honestly that's not the goal. It's an emotional tool, not a tracker.

The GPS must remain active throughout the race, which consumes battery. Nothing dramatic if your phone holds up, but keep in mind for an 80 km ultra.

Some usage ideas

Beyond the classic use "family that encourages during a marathon", there are scenarios worth a detour:

  • First 10K from a buddy — You organize a surprise for him with 10 messages from your group. He doesn't expect it, and the mental boost is huge.
  • Challenge between colleagues — Everyone runs the same course, and everyone records mutual encouragements. It creates a group dynamic even if you run on your own.
  • Close at a distance — Your family on the other side of the country can't come to see you by the roadside? With Cobbr, it's as if they were there.
  • Funny messages from the Discord squad — Because receiving a "GG WP" shouted by your teammate at km 38 is worth gold.

And if you don't run yourself, you can still participate. That's what's cool about the concept: all it takes is a link to record a message. Even from your couch between two games.

How much does it cost

0€. Cobbr is free. No disguised freemium, no "3 free messages then €4.99/month". You download, you create your race, your loved ones register, and you run. That's it.

We'll see if a premium model comes in the long run — the app is still new — but for now, there's absolutely nothing to pay. It's rare enough to be emphasized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my loved ones install the app?

No. They receive a web link, record their voice message directly from their browser, and it's done. No registration, no app to download on their side.

How many messages can be received per run?

As much as you want by default. Each message lasts up to 30 seconds. Since version 1.0.3, you can also set a limit on the number of messages received on the D-day.

Does it work with my music or podcast?

Yes. You launch your music, your podcast or your playlist as usual. Cobbr messages trigger over the airwaves, without interrupting your audio.

Is the app available on Android?

Not yet in May 2026. Cobbr is currently only available on iOS (App Store). The Android version is announced as "coming soon" on Google Play.

Does it work for trail running and ultra running?

Yes. The app supports all distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, trail, ultra. You can also create custom races if your event is not in the database.

Does Cobbr use a lot of battery?

The app uses GPS continuously to trigger messages at the right time, so yes, it consumes a bit. On a 10K or a half marathon, it's negligible. For an ultra, consider starting with a fully charged battery or a power bank.

Our opinion

Cobbr does not revolutionize running. It's not a tracking app, not a coach, not a performance tool. But that's precisely what makes it interesting: it fills a void that no one had really filled. Emotional support during a race, with the real voices of the people you love, at the exact moment you need it.

It's free, it's simple, and it literally requires zero effort from your loved ones to participate. If you or someone in your circle runs - even occasionally - it's worth a try. Worst case, you've lost two minutes. At best, you get the thrill at km 35 that helps you finish your first marathon.
