Retail, OEM, Tray Processors: Explaining the Different Forms of a CPU

CPU packaging processor OEM Tray

Why does the same processor cost differently? Retail, Tray, OEM... What does it really change for your setup.

You buy your CPU, and boom

You see the same reference — let's say a Ryzen 9 7950X — displayed at three different prices. Retail 500€. Tray 380€. OEM? It varies depending on the seller. What really changes? Honestly, not much at the silicon level. But in terms of warranty, cooler, and price? That's where the difference lies.

The Retail/Boxed version: what you buy everywhere

It's the one you find on LDLC, TopAchat, Amazon.fr, everywhere. It comes out of a nice white or colored box, with the manufacturer's logo clearly visible. Inside you have the complete documentation, a cardboard box for storage, a warranty card, and most importantly: a cooler. Intel throws in its good old stock cooler, AMD frowns on its K models (no cooler included).

Inside you find:

  • The smart box with the logo
  • A stock cooler (except for special models)
  • The manual in French
  • Manufacturer's warranty card
  • Direct Intel/AMD support for 3 years (if you register)

Price: 500-600€ for a current high-end gen (2026). Why is it more expensive? Because you pay for the cooler, the packaging, and the manufacturer's warranty.

The Tray/OEM version: the choice of the cheapskate builder

Imagine the same CPU, but sent in bulk in an industrial plastic bin. No box. No cooler. No manual. Just the naked processor, packaged minimally to survive transport.

It is intended for integrators (Dell, HP who sell you a finished configuration) or for guys who order in bulk — 10, 20, 100 units at once. The pros, the system integration companies, not the solo DIY.

What you receive:

  • Nothing. Just the CPU in a plastic bin
  • No cooler, zero
  • Warranty provided by the reseller (often 1-2 years max)
  • No direct Intel/AMD support - it's the seller who helps you

Price: 380-420€ for the same CPU. You save 100-150€. But you lose the cooler and the manufacturer's warranty (that's what weighs heavily).

Master Pack (MPK): the dealer between the two

There is also a variant that is less seen among small resellers: the Master Pack. It's Retail/Boxed stacked in a carton of 10-25 units, for integrators who want bulk.

All inside (cooler, 3-year warranty), but at a slightly reduced price because sold in volume. It's not relevant for an individual.

Wait, is the cooler important or not?

There you are thinking: Cool, I save 100€, I buy a third-party cooler later. Yes, it works technically. But you will spend 50-80€ on a good tower cooler. You don't save money in the end.

And a stock cooler, it's useful. Designed for the CPU, it maintains performance in the long term, it's silent. Not a thermal wonder, but it does the job. Are you investing an extra 100€ for custom? It's a gamble.

The real difference: the warranty

That's where it really matters. You buy Tray, the CPU crashes after 8 months? It's not Intel who helps — it's the reseller. And they have a 1-year warranty, so beyond the 12 months, you're shouting into the void.

Retail? 3 years. You register after 2.5 years? Intel gives you an RMA. Not 100% frictionless, but theoretically much better.

When you can take Tray

  • Are you an integrator or do you assemble in bulk (20+ machines)
  • You're weird about cooling and you have spare coolers
  • You buy old gen (Ryzen 5000, i7-12th) at a discounted price
  • The reseller is a trusted pro

When you will regret the Tray

  • You like peace of mind
  • It's your first CPU that you install yourself
  • 100€ of savings, it's not a big deal for you

And the prices in France 2026?

On the day I write (July 2026): Ryzen 9 7950X Retail ~550€ LDLC/TopAchat, Tray ~420€ import sites (Germany, UK). Intel i9-14900K Retail ~600€, Tray ~450€.

The difference depends on the stock and region. UK and Germany drop Tray prices by -25-30%. In France, it's rare because LDLC and Cdiscount want to sell you Retail with a margin.

Quick FAQ

Tray = no RMA?

False. DOA (Dead On Arrival)? Retailer replaces/refunds (normally 30 days). Beyond that, it's touchy.

Is the tray fragile during transit?

Yes less protection. But processors survive weird shocks. You'll mostly be scared.

Tray = opportunity ?

No. Stock Retail resold in Tray, or new from factory. Check: new and sealed.

Verdict 2026

Builder solo France: Retail. 3-year warranty, cooler included, worth €100 for peace of mind.

Integrator: Tray/OEM. Made for, masters the supply chain.

To save smartly: Retail previous gen (Ryzen 5000, i7-12th 2026). Cooler and warranty, 200-300€ cheaper than current gen. That's what really wins.
